Kathryn (Kay) Koenig Burdine of Victoria, Texas passed away Thursday, July 4, 2013.
She was born Sept. 16, 1932 in Cuero to Felix C. and Anna (Annie) Miller Koenig. Kay was a graduate of Cuero High School and of Victoria College. After finishing at Victoria College, Kay became a placement interviewer with the Texas Employment Commission office in Victoria.
In 1955, Kay met Francis Benton (Ben) Burdine, who was then an Air Force lieutenant and fighter pilot stationed at Foster Field in Victoria. Ben and Kay were married at Zion Lutheran Church of Arneckeville on Dec. 29, 1956. The couple relocated to Bryan and Kay continued working for TEC in its branch office in Bryan. When they moved to Houston, Kay transferred with TEC to one of its branch offices there, but was later promoted into its professional placement unit downtown. When Ben joined the Victoria College faculty in 1964, the couple moved back to the Victoria area, and Kay rejoined the Victoria TEC office. Three years later, Kay retired from TEC to await the birth of their son Blake, who would be their only child.
Kay was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church. Prior to her illness, she was very involved as both a Sunday school teacher (in earlier years) and in numerous church functions and activities. Kay was a caring and tireless homemaker, as well as an incredible cook. She was also a capable business woman and a meticulous keeper of the family books, including those of her ailing parents. Her passions included spending time with family, indulging her grandchildren, cooking, reading, bird-watching, and solving the newspaper’s daily crossword puzzle. Even during the most challenging years of her illness, she remained full of faith, ever-positive and optimistic, and excited about life. Kay was a selfless, loving, and devoted daughter, wife, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother who will be missed tremendously.
Survivors include her husband Ben Burdine of Victoria; son Blake Hunter Burdine, daughter-in-law Leigh Curtis Burdine, granddaughter Lauren Shell Burdine, and grandson Ryan Curtis Burdinem all of San Diego, California; sisters-in-law Kathryn Burdine Miller (Joe) of Pine City, Minn. and Patsy Goodson Burdine of Portland, Texas; as well as many other dear family members and friends. Kay was preceded in death by her parents and her infant brother Felix C. Koenig Jr.
The family wishes to acknowledge the many medical personnel who helped to extend Kay’s life, including Drs. Bauknight and Qadri, their respective staffs, and most notably the Skilled Nursing Unit at Citizens Medical Center whose skillful and compassionate care were outstanding during the final weeks of her life.
