The CAMAL Emergency Center provides emergency food to families depending upon level of income. Anyone living in Cuero who meets the qualifications is eligible. There is no discrimination on the basis of race, color, national orgin, sex, age, or disability in accordance with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The center is open on the second Thursday of each month from 9:30-10:30 a.m and 2-6 p.m. There is another distribution on the fourth Thursday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A new senior hour has been added to the first distribution day. Any senior 65 and older may come at 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
“We urgently ask those who are younger than 65 to be courteous and visit the center at one of the other distribution times. The senior hour is an opportunity for our older clients to not feel rushed and crowded,” said Eric Longbothom, CAMAL director.
CAMAL is seeking new volunteers to support the current volunteer core. Volunteer duties include: serving as host/hostess in the intake offices; serving as host/hostess in the waiting room by distributing bread items; carrying out groceries to client vehicles; helping bag groceries; delivering groceries to shut-ins; and help with unloading the food bank delivery truck.
The center is also accepting donated canned fruits, vegetables, meats and soups.
“Almost one out of every seven Cuero residents is in need of extra help with food,” Longbothom said.
If anyone is interested in providing a much needed service to the local community, contact CAMAL at 361-275-5022 or drop by during one of the distribution times.
