The following letter was submitted by Betty Billings of Cuero. The letter was written by her nephew and was previously printed in his local newspaper.
My name is Jerry Kidd. Most people in Luling know me because I have lived here all my life. I also own Kidd Trucking Company in Luling.
Right now, I am laying in a bed in San Antonio’s Methodist Hospital. I have been taking chemotherapy treatments for Acute Myeloid Leukemia and wondering how I got here. I have been feeling weak and tired for months and started losing weight because my appetite wasn’t very good.
I tried taking Androgel, a type of testosterone cream, and it helped for a few weeks. I started feeling weak again, noticed a sore in my mouth and my teeth and gums were hurting. Being a macho man I didn’t worry about it until it got worse and I couldn’t do much work without taking a break and sitting down. I found myself taking naps in the middle of the day and getting up later than usual.
I finally made an appointment with my doctor and had bloodwork done. When I went to see my doctor she told me my red blood cells were down and my white blood cells were up and strange looking. I told her I had an appointment with an oncology doctor in San Antonio, who had been treating me for a blood disorder I have, on Dec. 10.
Then Jess Knox died on Nov. 19. It saddened me because he was a beloved friend and family member. It also scared the crap out of me so I called and had my appointment moved up 15 days, as an emergency.
When I went to the doctor I found out what I had suspected: I have Leukemia. He did a bone marrow test and sent me home for Thanksgiving. He told me to be back at his office the following Monday and to bring an overnight bag. When we got there he had gotten my bone marrow test results back and things were more serious than he had thought.
Right now I am taking a steady drip of chemo, 24 hours a day for seven days. Then we wait for about 18 days to see how my white cells (which make up my immune system) are going to do about rebuilding (the chemo destroys them). I may get to come home for five days and will probably come back for another 25 day treatment like this one. I could have to do this four times. I just hope these treatments work.
The point is: If you are feeling tired, wanting to nap too much, start losing weight because of appetite, your teeth or gums get sore, your gums bleed or you start bruising easily, make an appointment with your doctor ASAP. Don’t wait or put it off. This could save your life. Please just check it out, not only for your sake, but for your family’s as well.
Please pray for me. It does work.
Jerry W. Kidd
