'When was the last time any of us told a law enforcement officer thank you for doing your job?'

Dear Editor,

When was the last time any of us told a law enforcement officer thank you for doing your job? I could ask when was the last time you recited the pledge of allegiance, that was to the flag and republic for which it stands? The constitution gave us a republic which is a land of laws to govern, not a democracy.

Our local law enforcement is our first line of defense in our society. Yes, Constitution Day, Sept. 17, has passed for this year, but I would ask everyone to mark Oct. 15 on your calendar.

'Cuero ISD's school village is filled with people who care'

By Jim Haley
Cuero ISD Superintendent

We are five weeks into this school year, and it has been a terrific start. As I visit the campuses, I see just how hard all of our educators work to meet our students’ needs. Our teachers remind me of the Energizer Bunny, they keep going and going and going. Whether it means arriving early to prepare for the day, or skipping lunch so they can make copies or tutor a student, or even when they stay until “dark-thirty” to sponsor a club, grade papers, conduct parent conferences, or coach a team, our educators make a huge personal investment to help our students be successful.

BGCDC thanks Extension Office

Dear Editor,

The Boys & Girls Club of DeWitt County wishes to sincerely thank Mrs. Denise Goebel with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office and all of her helpers for all of their hard work and dedication in making our first ever 'Dinner Tonite!' meal at the Club a huge success. Over 65 people were served a delicious meal of spinach quesadillas, beans, rice, chips, apple slices, and dessert. Club members who prepared the meal also seated and served their families who attended the event. Club members have already asked when the next event like this one will occur.  Thank you to everyone who has helped ensure that great futures start here.

Cheerleaders seek support for new mascot uniform

Dear Editor,

The Cuero Jr. High Cheerleaders are looking for a community member to help in the purchasing of a new uniform for our mascot, Toby. The uniform will cost $1,300 and will be used for many years to come. Toby is a very important member of the Gobbler Athletic program. He really gets the crowd going and brings out everyone’s spirits.

We are reaching out to you specifically because of your continued dedication to and support of our community. In recognition of your contribution, we will gladly issue a press release to the Cuero Record as well as have it announced at our first game of the season. We’ll be sure to post it on the Cuero ISD Facebook page as well.

Thanks to all the pageant sponsors

Dear Editor,

The Miss Yorktown Royalty Pageant held this past Saturday was quite eventful. Malarie Rodriguez and Whitney Schroeder did a fine job in bringing this event back to the community and showcasing our youth. Amy Lamprecht and Lorene Migura were also helpful in this project. The 24 contestants did a great job in their opening line dance performance and with their questions on stage with emcee Brother Gary Moses of Victoria. Too bad they can’t all be crowned, because they are all winners. It was very entertaining and we look forward to next year being bigger and better.

'Judge, I am short, but I can be brief'

By Patrick Kennedy
CDC Executive Director

When I give presentations I usually start off with a tale that happened a few years ago. I was in charge of a multi-county project that required me to attend various City Council and Commissioners Court meetings. This one particular county I noticed that the item was further down the agenda so I walked in while the meeting was already in progress.

When I arrived the Commissioner’s Court was in a contentious discussion with the Sheriff. It got so heated that the County Judge called for a brief recess. When the court resumed the Judge noticed my presence and called upon me. He said “Pat, can you be short?” I replied “Judge, I am short, but I can be brief.” After laughing, the Commissioner’s Court approved the item.

'Beaming with pride'

Dear Editor,

Pet Adoptions of Cuero is beaming with pride over the wonderful new and so many friends that have come forward to support the non-profit, all volunteer pet shelter organization.

Last week a team from Lone Star 4-H club came by the new facility at 407 U.S. Highway 183 South with a van load of pet food and shelter supplies. Special thanks to this group for helping with the daily needs and care of the cats and dogs at the shelter, all looking for forever homes. Assisting with the delivery were Bishop and Fallon Whitt. As noted, this group is just one of many in our community who have helped the shelter meet the continual requirements of food and funds that keeps this organization running 365 days a year. Thank you to everyone in the club who participated in the shelter drive.

Dear Editor,

Thank you to our Hometown HEB Store. HEB has adopted Hunt Elementary this school year and graciously provided the Hunt teachers and staff with lunch bags filled with goodies. HEB has generously supported Cuero schools and we look forward to continuing this community partnership. Pictured is Hunt Principal Bridgette Cerny presenting second grade teacher Missy Pakebusch with her HEB lunch bag.
