Bessie Green

Bessie Green, 89 of Nordheim, passed away Jan. 29, 2016.

She is survived by her daughter Shirley Ann Leister, two brothers, one sister, four grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 19 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents Floyd and Eva Hollaway, daughter Bernice Plant, two grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters.

Visitation was at 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31 at Massey Funeral Home. Funeral services was at 10 a.m. Feb. 1 at Massey Funeral Home. Interment followed at Nordheim Cemetery.

Louis A. Hartman

Louis A. Hartman, 83, of La Grange, formerly of Yorktown, died on January 29, 2016, at his home in La Grange.

Mr. Hartman was born on Aug. 21, 1932 in Skidmore, to Lee R. and Alice J. (Hector) Hartman. Louis graduated from Yorktown High School in 1951 where he was a member of the Wildcat football and basketball teams. On Feb. 13, 1955, he and his high school sweetheart, Drucelle Broughton, were married at the First Presbyterian Church in Yorktown.

The Hartman’s resided in Houston, for over 40 years where Louis was employed in Houston’s oil tool manufacturing sector. A supervisor with BJ-Hughes, Inc., he retired in 1986 after 23 years with the company.

Pilar Ruiz Jr.

Pilar Hernandez Ruiz, Jr., 68, of Cuero passed away Friday, January 29, 2016. He was born June 13, 1947 in Robstown to Pilar Ruiz, Sr. and Maria Sulema Hernandez. Pilar married the love of his life, Maria Antonia Trevino, July 24, 1970 in Robstown. He served in the United States Army in Vietnam from 1966 to 1968.  Pilar worked for the City of Cuero as a Street Department Foreman for 32 years.
 
He is survived by his wife, Maria; daughters, Belinda Guitierrez  of Robstown, Yvonne Volz of Corpus Christi, Eunice Ruiz of Round Rock, Carolina Cerny  of Shiner, and Rose Lantz of Corpus Christi; son, Pilar T. Ruiz, III;  sister, Sylvia R. Mejia of Cuero; and 13 grandchildren.
 
He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Cynthia Ruiz; grandson, Ethan Andrew Volz; and brother, Rene Ruiz.

Myrna Feril

Myrna Loy Feril, 80, joined her heavenly family Monday, January 25, 2016.
 
She was born April 22, 1935 in Houston to the late Charles F. and Aubrey Mae Jacobs Quast.
 
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Methodist Women’s Group, Literary Club, Pilot Club, Progressive Study Club, Bridge Club, former board member of Blue Bonnet Youth Ranch, Friends of the Library and Victoria Fine Arts.
 
She married the love of her life, Travis Feril June 26, 1952 and they had two sons and one daughter.

Catherine Finch

Catherine Howard Finch, age 92, passed away January 29, 2016 at her home in Smiley. She was born on April 29, 1923 in Marietta, Okla., to the late Felix Andrew and Willie Dell (Sowell) Howard. She married Barney Finch on June 22, 1968 in Smiley. He preceded her in death on March 4, 1975. Also preceding her in death was her brother, John Matt Howard.
 
Catherine is survived by her step-children: Jo Ann Markowsky and husband Carol “Babe” of Mound Creek; Don R. Finch and wife Gladyne of Nixon; Gary P. Finch and wife Paulette of Smiley; sister-in-law, Dorothy Dell Howard of Denton; nephew, Bruce Howard and wife Nancy, of Brownsbury, Ind.; niece, Sheila Helm of Denton; seven step-grandchildren, nine step-great-grandchildren, one step-great-great-grandchild, three great-nieces, three great-nephews, three great-great-nieces, her cousins from Tennessee and many friends.

Viola Edwards Sparks

Viola Edwards Sparks entered into rest on January 29, 2016 at the age of 69. She was born on Sept. 2, 1946 in Cuero to the late Nathan and Jessie Williams Edwards.

Viola is survived by her sons, Odist Sparks, Jr., Robert Sparks, and Artis Sparks; daughters Pamela Thomas and Perstefanie Sparks; brothers, Melvin Edwards and Paul Edwards; and her sisters Martha Ann Roach, Sarah Edwards, and Mary Jane Gill.

She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and four great, grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Odist Sparks, her brothers Johnny Edwards, Louis Edwards, and Lester Edwards; and sister, Cora Mae Adams.

Jesus Gutierrez Jr.

Jesus Gutierrez Jr, 75, of Yorktown passed away Friday Jan. 29, 2016. He was born Aug. 31, 1940 in Yorktown to the late Jesus and Onorata Saldivar Gutierrez Sr. He loved being on the ranch, roping and working cattle. He also loved dancing.

He is survived by his wife Amelia Gutierrez of Yorktown, children Mary Alice (Johnny) Flores of Floresville, Rose Ann Flores (Robert Bernal) of San Antonio, Martha (Joe) Garcia of Yorktown, Jessie (Rachel) Gutierrez of Stockdale, Norma (Mark) Ximenez of Floresville, and Michael Gutierrez of Yorktown, sister Emilia Cortez of Smiley and brother Alex Gutierrez of Martinez. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Benina Garcia and Paulina Nunico.

Clifford Carroll, Jr.

Clifford Carroll, Jr. passed away early Thursday morning, Jan. 28 at the age of 90. He died quietly in his sleep at his home in the country. He was among family and in good spirits and comfort despite his failing health.
 
Clifford was born in Yoakum on Oct. 9, 1925 to Clifford Sr. and Josephine Bullard Carroll. He attended Lander School, a country school that he walked to each day, which was three miles from his home. Clifford was partly-disabled at a young age when he was working cattle on horseback and hit a tree branch. After a week in a coma, he never regained his hearing in one ear. His ability to persevere with this condition was an inspiration to those who were close to him. He lived in the country his entire life, and it was there he met his future bride, Bernice, at the Hebron store that her sister, Gladys, owned.

Richard Trevino

Richard Trevino, 65, of Austin passed away Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016. He was born May 6, 1950 in Cuero to Miguel and Mary Trevino.
 
He is survived by sisters, Josie Zapata, Mamie Trevino and Martha Garza (Robert) all of Cuero, Eugenia Munoz and Mary Trevino of Yorktown; brother, Eloy Trevino of Cuero; and niece raised like a sister, Debbie Salas of Yorktown.
 
He is preceded in death by parents; sister Margaret Renteria; and brothers, Miguel Trevino and Pete Trevino.
 
Services will be held Thursday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.

Bob Farris

Robert “Bob” W. Farris, Sr., 91, of Cuero passed away Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016. He was born Oct. 1, 1924 in Houston to Bob and Muriel Farris. Bob married the love of his life, Maxine Marie Knodel, Feb. 16, 1951. He served in the United States Air Force as a Navigator flying special night missions during the Korean War. Bob started his automobile career at Byron Brown Oldsmobile in Houston, then continued his career at Bud Moore Chevrolet until 1976 when he purchased his dealership in Cuero, until he retired in 2008 at the age of 83. He was very active in the Cuero VFW Post 3972 for many years, was a long time Mason, and a member of Cuero First United Methodist Church for over 40 years. Bob loved being around his family and helping them when needed. He was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will truly be missed by all; “he was a true gentleman.”
