Kenneth Cooper

Heaven gained an angel when, on March 17, 2016, Kenneth W. Cooper passed from this life to live with our Lord at the age of 75. He was born on May 27, 1940 to the late Riley G. and Norma Lee Cooper in Pleasanton, Texas. He lived there until he began working for DuPont as an operator and then mechanic, moving his family to Meyersville. He worked for DuPont for 28 ½ years before being medically retired in 1996.

He was an avid hunter, fisherman, mechanic, and gardener. Devoted to his wife and girls, he spent countless hours of time with helping on 4-H animals and projects, and he took great pride and happiness in all his grandchildren. Those that knew him readily saw his integrity, honesty, work ethic and willingness to help others.

“Sunny” Manuel Perez Jr.

“Sunny” Manuel Perez Jr. 50, of Yorktown, died Sunday March 6, 2016. He was born March 10, 1965 in Nixon to Rosa Gonzales and the late Manuel Perez Sr.

He is survived by his mother Rosa Gonzales of Yorktown, sons Manuel Perez III, Adrian Perez, Jose Perez, daughters Monica Perez, Rosie Perez, Elizabeth Perez, 21 grandchildren and sisters Norma Perez Herrera and Lorain Gonzales.

He is preceded in death by father Manuel A. Perez.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 11 at Massey Funeral Home with a rosary starting at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 12 at San Luis Catholic Church. Interment will follow at San Luis Catholic Cemetery.

Belen Pena

Belen Salazar Pena entered into rest on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at the age of 76.

She was born on March 13, 1939 in Hallettsville to the late Pedro and Inez Aguilar Salazar. 

She is survived by her children Pedro (Janie) Hernandez of Cuero; Pascual (Elvira) Hernandez and David Salazar, both of Brownfield; Santiago (Juana) Pena, Jr. of Lubbock; Estella Esquivel, Irene Flores, and  Guillerma Hernandez, and Angelica (Gelasio Jr.) Garcia, all of Cuero; Rosana (Reynolfo) Gonzales of Runge; and Maria Luisa Perez of Cuero. She is also survived by her sisters Dominga (Uvence L. Jr.) Davila of Victoria; Susie (Faustino) Alvarez of Victoria; and Teresa (Jose) Estrada of Saginaw, Michigan. In addition, she is survived by her 26 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Alexander Lopez

Alexander (Alex) Lopez, 80, of Cuero passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2016. He was born June 3, 1935 in Concrete to the late Louis Lopez and Librada DeHoyos Lopez. He married the love of his life, Dora Saenz, Oct. 17, 1959 in Belton.

He is survived by his wife, Dora; daughters Mary Linda Arguellez (Mario), JoAnn Renteria (Michael) and Yolanda Barron (Nabor), all of Cuero; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; brothers, Joe Lopez (Dorothy) of Yoakum and Johnny Trevino (Theresa) of Cuero.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers David Lopez, Martin Lopez, Leroy Lopez, Louis Lopez, Jr., Augustine Lopez, Jesse Lopez, Sr.,  and infant Pedro Lopez; sisters, infant Marie Louisa Lopez, Frances Gutierrez, Elvira Vera and Narcissa Alaniz.

Bernice Henze

Bernice Henze, 97, of Yorktown, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Thursday March 3, 2016. She was born Feb. 4, 1919 in Cuero to the late W.P. and Edna Voelkel Schulz. She was baptized into the faith August 10, 1919 and confirmed April 10, 1938 under the guidance of Rev. Schaws at Nordheim Lutheran Church. She enjoyed going to dances with her friends and it was at one of these dances she met her future husband Norris. On Dec. 20, 1938 she and Norris married and she left the amenities in Nordheim and traded them for life in the country. Bernice always said she didn’t know how to boil water when she first married, but you would have never guessed as she was an excellent cook.  She loved to read and play Skip-Bo.  After her Lord and Savior, her family was most important to her and she loved having everyone come to visit on Saturday nights. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Miriam Circle.

John Bade

Rev. John Randolph Bade, pastor, author, poet, and friend to all, passed away March 2, 2016.

He is survived by his wife Rev. Robin McCullough-Bade, son Michael Bade and his fiancé Alisha Rosa. John fought the good fight against Parkinson’s Disease for over 26 years and provided hope to those who daily face adversity. His gentle strength and beautiful smile brought the best out of those he met. He helped create Movers and Shakers, a local Parkinson’s support group. He embodied his mantra “Peace, Courage, and Strength!” John was born in Cuero, DeWitt County, Texas on Dec.3, 1957, the sixth child of Heinie and Frieda Bade. He was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Arneckeville and confirmed at St. Mark Lutheran Church, Cuer.

Rose Haley

Rose A. Haley, age 89, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2016.

She was born Oct. 11, 1926 in Lavaca County to Samuel and Victoria Jahn Sandelowitz.

Survivors are her daughter, Jacque Zehner of Modesto, California; sisters, Helen Grossman of San Antonio and Loraine Anderson of Waco.

Preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dr. Robert R. Haley; son, Randall N. Russell; sister, Margie L’HommeDieu.

Graveside service 11 a.m. Friday, March 4 at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery with Mr. Darrell Powell officiating.

Memorials may be made to ASPCA or Wounded Warriors.

Jose Bermea

Jose “Coyote” Bermea, age 78, of Smiley, passed away March 2, 2016 in Victoria. He was born on Sept. 18, 1937 in Smiley. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, Evaristo and Eustolia (Castro) Bermea; a son, Antonio “Tony” Bermea; numerous brothers and a sister.  Jose is survived by his wife, Irenia “Irene” Bermea of Smiley; two sons: Mario Bermea and wife Adella of Smiley; Paul Bermea and wife Sally of Seguin; seven grandchildren:  Nicole Reid and husband Chris, Joshua Bermea, Ariel Bermea, Madison Bermea, Morgan Bermea, Aciana Bermea and Justin Cardova, Tony Bermea Jr.; four great-grandchildren: Christopher Reid Jr., Justice Cardova, Josia Cardova, and Jaxton Cardova; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.

Dennis Pargmann

Dennis W. Pargmann, 68, of Nordheim, passed away March 3, 2016. He was born July 28, 1947, in Cuero to the late Larry Omar and Alvina Deiringer Pargmann. 

Dennis is survived by his wife, Esmeralda Pargmann; daughters, Tammy Ledwik (David), Kathy Pargmann (Cory), Pam Pargmann and Tracy Pargmann; sister, Donna Reynolds (Dennis); brothers, Larry Pargmann (Frances) and Jimmy Pargmann (Pat); grandchildren, Sheldon Lassmann, Shelby Pargmann, Kaitlyn Watson, Kaleigh Jozwiak, Corey Pargmann, Bryleigh Flores and Korbyn Molina; numerous nieces and nephews. 

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Monday, March 7 at Finch Funeral Chapel. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 8 at Finch Funeral Chapel with Pastor Sue Irvin officiating. Burial will follow in Nordheim Cemetery.

Janice Ocean

Janice Terlene (Terri) Morrow Ocean, 77, of Austin, passed away on Feb. 24, 2016. She was born in DeWitt County on Nov. 23, 1938. She graduated from Cuero High School in Cuero and graduated from Jefferson Davis Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. Her nursing career took her to Abilene; Anaheim; Garden Grove, California; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Austin. She specialized in pediatric, adolescent psychiatric and home health nursing, ending her 50-year nursing career at Meridell Achievement Center in Liberty Hill.

Terri Ocean enjoyed shopping at resale stores for treasures, collecting buttons, hearts, and other collectables. She loved cooking, decorating, and spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of Chapter R, PEO, in Austin.
