Johnny Hahn

Johnny Lee Hahn, 68, of Cuero, passed away Monday, Feb. 22, 2016. He was born Jan. 17, 1948 in George West to the late Jacob and Barbara Hahn.

Johnny is survived by wife, Patricia Johnson; daughter, Amy Hahn and son, Fennis Green; sister, Lorene Williams and brother, Jerry Lee Hahn.

Services will be held Monday, Feb. 29 at 10 a.m. at Freund Funeral Home with Reverend Dennis King officiating.

Vincent DiGiantomasso

Vincent Joseph DiGiantomasso, 86, of Cuero passed away Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016. He was born Jan. 26, 1930 to Joseph Anthony and Rose Marie DiGiantomasso in Detroit, Michigan. Vincent married the love of his life, Marlene Ann Ruschhaupt, on Dec. 22, 1952 in Cuero. He served in the United States Air Force from July 1948 through July 1952 and played semi-professional baseball for the Victoria Rosebuds as shortstop. Vincent enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid golfer.

He is survived by daughter Cheryl Ann DiGiantomasso; and grandchildren, Andrew Vincent Moore and Jessica Gonowon of Cary, North Carolina and Sarah and Dustin Turner of Austin.

He was preceded in death by parents; and wife, Marlene.

Visitation will be Sunday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. with a Memorial Service starting at 3 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home with Father David Berger officiating.


Marjorie Wright

Marjorie Wright, age 93, passed away Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016.

She was born Sept. 12, 1922 in Wichita, Kansas to F.B. Lowry and Bess Lowry.

She was a junior high school teacher in Arlington for 29 years and a Methodist.

Survivors include daughters, Jayne Kennedy Cooper of Cuero and Nancy Ashenhart of Arlington; son, Michael Kennedy (Sandee) of Cleburne, Texas; grandchildren, Anthony Eckenrod (Vangie) of Yorktown and Jennifer Abernathy (Billy) of Plano; great-grandchildren, Evelyn, Gray and Natalie; sister, Betty Leatherwood of Victoria; step-son, Tom Wright (Mary) of Little Elm and step-daughter, Alice Payn (John) of Allen.

She was preceded in death by husbands, Jerry A. Kennedy and Jasper Wright and sister, Barbara Farmer.


Geneva Ley

Geneva Ann Boysen Ley, of Victoria, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016. She was born on July 30, 1936, to Edmund C. Boysen and Georgia J. Boysen in Westhoff, Texas. Geneva was raised in faith in the Lutheran church and was a devout child of God.

Geneva graduated from Cuero High School in 1954. In the late 1950’s Geneva won the title of Miss Cuero, representing her small town well. She attended Victoria College. Geneva married Carroll Ley, of Cuero, in 1956.


Emilia G. Cortez

Emilia G. Cortez, 82, of Rosharon, passed away Monday Feb. 15, 2016.  She was born in Robstown on May 13, 1933 to the late Jesus and Honarta Saldivar Gutierrez. She was a member of St. Phillip Catholic Church in Smiley.

She is survived by her daughters Marta (Natividad) Flores of Yorktown, Anna (Robert) Salinas of Rosharon, Janie (Jerry) Ramos of Round Rock, Sons Euesbio Rodriguez of Navasota, Hamie (Ester) Cortez of Uvalde and Robert Cortez of Brady.

She is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild and brother Alex Gutierrez of Martinez.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Jesus Gutierrez, sisters Benina Garcia and Paulina Nunico.

Visitation will be 5-7 pm Thursday Feb. 18 with a rosary starting at 7 pm at Massey Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be 11 am Friday Feb. 19 at San Luis Catholic Church.


Elfie Louise Baacke

Elfie Louise Baacke, 92, of Yorktown passed away Tuesday Feb. 16, 2016. She was born March 25, 1923 in Goliad County to the late William C. and Louise Els Lude. She married Roman Baacke Sept. 24, 1944 at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Weesatche.

She is survived by her husband of 71 years Roman Baacke, daughter Beth Allison and husband Gerald, granddaughter Joslyn Hensley and husband Nick and great grandchildren Kaylee and Kaleb Hensley. She is also survived by her sisters Rosie Karnei, Dorothy Lude and Nettie Schulze and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Edwin Lude, David Lude, sister Elsie Baacke and an infant sister.

Visitation will be 5-7 pm Friday Feb. 19 at Massey Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be 10 am Saturday, Feb. 20  at Massey Funeral Home with Rev. C.B. Suggs officiating. Interment will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery.


Bernard Hajovsky Jr.

Bernard “Bernie” Hajovsky, Jr., 63, of Cuero passed away on Feb. 16, 2016.  He was born on April 17, 1952 in Shiner as the second of seven children to Bernard and Loretta Hajovsky of Gonzales.

He is survived by his wife Nancy Jean Novak Hajovsky; his children Bridgette Lynette Cerny (Matthew), Brandy Jean Williams (Justin), Bernie Joe Hajovsky (Jordan), Blake Bernard Hajovsky (Ashley), and Bryan Bernard Hajovsky, OFM Conv; and his grandchildren Brooke Marie Cerny, Kristin Elizabeth Cerny, Sabine Anna Marie Williams, Harris Kristek Hajovsky, Jackson Dominic Hajovsky, Rylie Claire Hajovsky, Molly Catherine Hajovsky, and Colton Luke Hajovsky, all who affectionately called him “Pappy.”  He is also survived by his siblings Elaine Brzozowski, David Hajovsky, Jeanette Collins, Judy Ealand, Lori Thomas, and Bonnie Barton.


Jacqueline Ponder

Jacqueline LaTurno Ponder, 86, of Yorktown and Pflugerville passed away peacefully with family at her side, on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016, in Round Rock. 

Jackie was born June 17, 1929 in Festus, Missouri to William K. LaTurno and Alice Naomi (Vinyard) LaTurno. Following her 1947 graduation from Festus High School, she trained at Deaconess School of Nursing in St. Louis, Missouri and became a Registered Nurse. Jackie moved to Houston to further her nursing career, working at the then new Methodist Hospital. She later worked at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, and was proud to have had the opportunity to work in medical research with Drs. Michael DeBakey and Denton Cooley to develop an artificial heart. 


George Edward Balcar

George Edward Balcar, 78, of Yorktown, passed away Thursday Feb. 11, 2016. He was born Sept. 20, 1937 in Dimebox to the late John and Mary Elsik Balcar. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. He married Audrey Deanna Schroeter at St. Paul Lutheran Church on March 26, 1960.

He graduated from high school in Dime Box, attended Blinn Junior College and graduated from Southwest Texas State University. He worked at Armco Steel in Houston and was a teacher at Cuero Junior High and rancher.

He is survived by his wife Audrey of Yorktown, sons Glen Marshall (Carol) Balcar of Dime Box, and Morgan Wade (Sandy) Balcar of Spring Barnch, and two grandchildren Brittany Balcar and Leah (Luke) Black.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Rose Marie Brinkman and brother Johnny Balcar.

Visitation was from 4-6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15 at Massey Funeral Home.

Memorials can be given to Yorktown EMS, Yorktown Fire Department or St. Paul Lutheran Church.


Cynthia Thompson

Cynthia A. Thompson entered into rest on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016 at the age of 57. She was born on April 10, 1958 to Tommy and Vivian Gardner Thomas in Cuero. She attended First United Methodist Church in Cuero.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Bobby Thompson; her brothers, Jerald Thomas, Ervin Thomas, and Marlin Thomas; her sisters Yvonne Gardner-Strait, Gwen Monroe, Tommie Williams, and Angela Dowell.
She is preceded in death by her brother, Ernest (E.J.) Thomas.
