Donna Thomas

Donna Schumacher Thomas, 47, of Goliad, formerly of Cuero, passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2016. She was born Jan. 10, 1969 at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma to the late Harry Lee Schumacher and Gayle Conklin. Donna graduated from Cuero High School in 1987 and received her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Houston-Victoria in Early Childhood Education and then her Master’s Degree in Education Administration, all while taking care of her siblings, raising her own children, and working full time. She married Mike A. Thomas on July 28, 2012 at their home and followed up shortly after with a celebration of their marriage at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Donna retired from Yoakum Junior High where she served as Assistant Principal.

Verna Gohmert

Verna Lee Gohmert, 94, passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2016. She was born Dec. 11, 1921 in Lindenau to the late Joseph William and Selma Anna Boehm Till. Verna Lee married the love of her life, Newton G. Gohmert, on Nov. 18, 1940 in Yorktown. She was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her family. Verna Lee was a lifelong member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, the Altar Society, the Sons of Hermann, and the Kopy Kats Klub.

She is survived by her daughters, Joan Marie Flowers of Seattle, Washington and Janis Ann Pakebusch and husband, Dennis, of Cuero; sons, Donald Gohmert and wife, Jo, of Alexandria, Louisiana, Charles Gohmert and wife, Susie, of Mission Valley, Michael Gohmert and wife, Dell, of Mission Valley, and Richard Gohmert and wife, Lindy, of Cuero; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband.

Angela Preiss

Angela Preiss, 51, of Cuero, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 5, 2016. She was born in Mineral Wells on Feb. 15, 1965 to the late Owen Clark Hogan, Jr. and Shirley Ann Hadamek Koenning. She was also preceded in death by her step-father, Lonnie Koenning.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Preiss of Cuero; sons, Will Zimmerman (Annie) and Wesley Zimmerman (Stephanie) of Victoria; sisters Rexene Matusek (Bruce) of Austin and Mary Hall (Jeff) of Newport, Tennessee; step-brother, Ronnie Koenning of Yoakum; step-sisters, Dorothy Kremling (Kenny) of Hallettsville and Donna Moreno (Stas) of Houston; step-son, R.J. Preiss; and step-daughter, Jana Preiss, both of Cuero.

Angie loved her five grandchildren with all her heart; Jonathan Zimmerman of Victoria and Aariana White, A’ron White, Marla Preiss and Mitchell Preiss, all of Cuero.

Betty Moritz

Betty Sue Moritz, 70, passed away July 2, 2016. She was born Feb. 2, 1946 in Cuero. She was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Meyersville. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Erwin and Leona Moritz and sister, Geraldine Pullin.

She is survived by her sisters, Fay Hood of Rosenberg and Myrna Smith os Santa Barbara, California; brothers, Conrow Moritz of Cuero and Wiley Moritz of Meyersville and nieces and nephews.

Rhoda M. Strickland

Rhoda Marie Strickland went to be with our Lord on June 20, 2016, surrounded by friends and family.

Services was at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 9 at Villa St. Joseph Chapel, 11901 Rosewood Dr., Overland Park, Kan.

Rhoda was born Aug. 20, 1935. She is the daughter of Tharp H. Edgar & Carlyn L. “Geffert” Edgar from Yorktown.

She was preceded in death by her husband Warren M. Strickland, parents Tharp and Carlyn Edgar, sister Karla L. Bracklein and her husband Bob, and her son Michael Ray Short.

Survivors include her dear cousin Darlene Mayer of San Antonio, daughters Christine Henning and husband Allan of Olathe, Kan., Rochelle Mau and husband Ron of Cullowhee, N.C., daughter-in-law Gina Short of Waco, sons Dennis Strickland and wife Jennifer of Bucyrus, Kan., and John “Ricky” Strickland and wife Cheryl of Morgantown, Ky., 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Theresa M. FitzSimon

Theresa M. FitzSimon, dear mother, sister, friend passed away June 23, 2016 at the age of 86 at home with family. Theresa was born on Feb. 17, 1930 in Yorktown to Steve R. Dlugosch and Sallie B. (Migura) Dlugosch. On Feb. 8, 1958, she married Donald E. J. FitzSimon in San Antonio. Theresa was an active member of St. Benedict Catholic Church since 1963, and was a Charter member of the USAA Federal Credit Union. Theresa was preceded in death by her parents, nephew Wilbert C. Dennis, and grandson Matthew D. Williams. She will be forever loved and missed by her children, Stephen P. FitzSimon and wife Nancy, Dr. Denise I. FitzSimon-Hawkes and husband Howard, and Laurence E. FitzSimon and wife Stacia; grandchildren, Mary K. FitzSimon Grigar and husband Stephen, Stephen R. FitzSimon, Laura L. FitzSimon, Dr. Charlie B. Williams and wife Katherine, Patrick D. Williams, Megan E. FitzSimon Green and husband Cody, and Eric D.

Barbara Lynn Scheffler Morisse

Barbara Lynn Scheffler Morisse of Angleton passed away at her home on Sunday, June 26, 2016 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Nordheim on June 19, 1933, to Dr. Daniel Charles and Virgie Sally Scheffler.

Barbara graduated from Nordheim High School in 1950 and attended the University of Texas, Austin.

In 1953, she married Bruce Henry Morisse and they moved to Freeport where he began his newspaper career in advertising with the Freeport Facts Review.

Barbara spent much of her time keeping a busy home and raising an active family. She was quite the seamstress and enjoyed using her green thumb to keep a beautiful yard filled with a variety of plants. She could always be found “fiddling with the dogs and cats” and could easily justify another four-legged mouth to feed.

Darlene Bennett

Darlene Barber Bennett, 91, of Cuero passed away Sunday, July 3, 2016. She was born Aug. 4, 1924 in Cuero to the late Ferdie Lee and Alma Hare Barber. Darlene married the love of her life, Joe E. “Pig” Bennett, on June 2, 1942 in Cuero. She was baptized on March 28, 1954 at First Baptist Church in Cuero, along with her husband and son, Edward Lee. Darlene was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her family.

She is survived by daughter, Jolene Bennett White; sons, Edward Lee Bennett and Jimmy Bennett; sister, Glady Rusche; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband; sister, Lola Tolbert; brothers, Hubert Barber, Derwood Barber, and Bruce Barber; and granddaughter, Lori Beth Bennett.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, July 5 at 10 a.m., at Hillside Cemetery with Dr. Glenn Robertson officiating. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of donor’s choice.

Dorothy Bauer

Dorothy Guinn Bauer, 90, of Cuero passed away Monday, June 27, 2016. She was born Nov. 9, 1925 in Sugarland to the late John and Clara Brooks Guinn. Dorothy married the love of her life, John D. Bauer, Sr., July 31, 1948 in Hallettsville. She loved to gamble and bowled in league for many years. Dorothy also cherished her time with family and friends.

She is survived by her loving husband John D. Bauer; sons, John Davis Bauer, Jr. (Virginia) and Chuck Alan Bauer (Sharon); grandchildren, John Davis Bauer III (Jennifer), Caleb Mitchell Bauer (Adriane), Chandra Carbonara (Will), Kahlei Villarreal (Gabe), Hayden Matejek and Crayton Matejek; seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by parents; sister, Eunice Brier; and brother Victor Guinn.

James Sumner

James McRay Sumner, age 72, passed away June 24, 2016 in San Antonio. 

Graveside service and interment with military honors will be held Wednesday, June 29 at San Geronimo Cemetery at 10 a.m. with Rev. Jeremy Roy officiating. 

James was born Sept. 29, 1943 in Gonzales to James and Rose Nell (Moffett) Sumner. James grew up in Cuero and was a graduate of Cuero High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Green Beret during two tours in Vietnam. He served in law enforcement at both Trinity University and Texas Lutheran University. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, and his former wife and friend, Yvonne Sumner.
