Ella Ruiz

Ella Garcia Ruiz, age 82, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016. She was born Oct. 16, 1933 in Midway to Gilbert and Alicia Vera Garcia.

She was a homemaker and member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. She faithfully volunteered at St. Michael’s Catholic Church at the monthly bingos and the yearly Jamaica at Our Lady of Gradalupe. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and spent time caring for other people in different ways throughout her life.

Survivors include her daughter, Rachel Schmidt (Dennis) of Austin; sons, Roland Ruiz (Janie) of Friendswood, Roy Ruiz (Muriel) of Hitchcock, Raymond Ruiz of Cuero and Randall Ruiz (Amy) of Cuero; grandchildren, Roland Ruiz, Jr., Sarabeth Ruiz, Jonathan Ruiz, Kera Ruiz, Michaela Ruiz, John Thomas Ruiz, and James Colton Ruiz; brother, Edwin Garca (Ninfa) of San Antonio; many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Ida Varela

Ida Varela passed into eternal rest on Aug. 17, 2016 at the age of 49. She was born on Sept. 7, 1966 in Yorktown to the late Pete V. Rodriguez and Pauline Ruiz Rodriguez.

Ida leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 31 years Ismal Varela; her mother, Pauline Ruiz Rodriguez; her only son, Michael “Chito” and Angela Varela; grandsons, Isaac and Makai Varela; brothers, Pete and Yolanda Rodriguez, Michael and Stephanie Rodriguez, Jesse and Delilah Rodriguez, and brother in law Henry Varela.

Ida is preceded in death by her father Pete V. Rodriguez.

Pallbearers: Danny Stewart, Jesse Martinez, Bobby Allen Jones, Wayne Mathis, Brandon Mays, James Washington, Isaiah Gamez and Jason Gamez.

Remilda Schultz

Remilda Schultz, 92, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016. She was born in DeWitt County on Jan. 5, 1924 to the late Henry and Amanda Kruger Bade. Remilda married Eldred Schultz on Feb. 18, 1944 in San Diego, California. Remilda was a wonderful homemaker and cook, and enjoyed spending time with her family.  She was a member of the Cuero Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary for many years and very active with the Women of St. Marks Lutheran Church.

She is survived by a son, Glynn Robert and wife, Kathy, and daughter, Yvonne Thamm and husband, David; three grandchildren, Toya Wagner, Shannon Rios, and Lance Thamm; and eight  great-grandchildren, Jade Hayes, Anthony Rios, Kaitlyn Wagner, Cannon Wagner, Abigail Rios, Seth Bradley, Amberly Rios, and Amanda Rios.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Eldred; daughter, Patricia Ann; her parents; two brothers, Heinie and Berner Bade; and great-granddaughter, Isabella Marie.

Frederick Stoldt

Frederick Warren Stoldt, 92, of Cuero passed away Monday, Aug. 15, 2016. He was born Sept. 15, 1923 in Yale, Kansas to the late Frederick and Mary Stoldt. He married the love of his life, Virginia Ruth Hartman on Nov. 8, 1952 in Victoria. Frederick served in the United States Army Air Corp. and worked for Dow Chemical in Lake Jackson as Plant Foreman for 32 years.

He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia; daughters, Gina Zavesky (Jode) of Cuero, Karen Stoldt Cupples  of Round Rock; sons, Michael Stoldt (Kay ) of Angleton, Richard Stoldt (Deb ) of Mishawaka, IN; sister, Elizabeth Stoldt Smith of Paola, KS; grandsons,  James W. Cupples of San Antonio, Travis A. Zavesky of Cuero, Joseph Stoldt of Mishawaka, IN; step-grandson, Robert Zavesky of Goliad; step-granddaughters, Kari Zavesky Goehring  (Ben) of Victoria, and Erin Laboy (Wilhem) of Woodbury MN; great-grandchildren, Connor, Andre, Elena, Ethan and Lucas.

Wilber Smith

Wilber John Smith was born in Camby, Missouri on July 30, 1939. He passed away on Aug. 10, 2016.

He is survived by his children David (Iris) Smith, Debra (Dennis) Grahmann and Davitt (Amy) Smith; grandchildren Markus Pick, Rebecca (James) Merideth, Amanda Pick, Brittany Funderbuck, Kyna (Jeffery) Engle, Keith Smith and Karley Smith; great-grandchildren James Smith, Tori Funderbuck, Daniel Funderbuck, Zoei Teague, Kathleen Merideth, Baylee Merideth, Kaylee Kendrick, Jameson Kendrick and Nathan Smith; living sister Rocky Taggart; living brother George Smith and nephew, Jack (Roxy) Ward and extended family.

Smith was known as a hard-working man but also knew how to have a good time and relax. He had a good reputation through his septic business. Till this day many ask about him. He was also known for his sense of humore and kind heart.

Wilber also knew many Bible truths and many times expressed them to those whom he would meet.

Julia Washington

Julia Coronado Washington, 39, of Cuero passed away Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2016. She was born Sept. 14, 1976 in Lake Charles, Louisiana to Martin and Felisidad Coronado. 

She is survived by her husband, Shawn Washington; daughter, Madylenn Beltran; son, Julian Washington all of Cuero; sisters, Sanda DeLeon Davis of Arnudville, Louisiana, and Ruth Carmona of Cuero; brothers, Martin DeLeon of Markham, David DeLeon, Ysidro Coronado and Martin Coronado, Jr. all of Cuero.

She is preceded in death by her parents Martin Ortiz Coronado Sr. and Felisidad DeLeon Coronado.

Visitation will be held Sunday, Aug. 14 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home, with a Rosary beginning at 6 p.m. Services will be held Monday, Aug. 15 at 10 am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Father David Berger officiating. Interment to follow at Hillside Cemetery.

Carlos Rodriguez

Carlos Rodriguez, age 73, of Yorktown, Texas passed away Friday Aug. 5, 2016 in Floresville, Texas. He was born May 13, 1943 in Corpus Christi, Texas and raised in Karnes City, Texas to Lupe P. Rodriguez and Isidora Rodriguez. Carlos served his country as a SGT(T) in the US Army during Vietnam, earning numerous medals including Bronze Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and a Purple Heart. He is survived by his sister Clara Ramirez; half-sisters Irene Hernandez, Linda Diaz, Mary Ann Zamora, Connie Moses, Norma Goodhue, Lora Zimmermann, and Nora Leal; half-brothers Lupe Rodriguez Jr., Moses Rodriguez, Mike Rodriguez, Mike Ramirez, Mario Ramirez, and Jerry Ramirez; nephew and niece David and Marla Morales; longtime partner Pauline De Los Santos and their beloved dog G. Carlos is preceded in death by his parents; sister Belen Rodriguez and brothers Joe Abel and Oscar Rodriguez. Visitation began at 9 a.m., Monday, Aug.

Evangelina "Blanche" Perez

Evangelina “Blanche” Perez, 76, of Houston, passed away August 2, 2016. She was born September 1, 1939, in Yorktown, to the late Alfred January and Josephine DeLeon Perez. Blanche is survived by her children, Ursula Perez, Michael Perez, Cherie Perez Gutierrez (Richard); grandchildren, Edward, Amaris and Alyssa; siblings, Vera Botello, Alfredo Perez Jr, Alcario Perez Sr, Connie Gallarza, Susan Redmon, Carmen Perez, John Perez, Helen Troyer and Terry Perez; aunt, Rafaela DeLeon; uncle, John DeLeon; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation will be 5-8 pm with a Rosary at 6:30 pm, Friday, Aug. 5, 2016, at Finch Funeral Chapel. Bobby McMahan

Bobby Jeff McMahan, 82, passed away Aug. 2, 2016 at his home after a brave, hard fought battle with cancer. Bobby was born Jan. 5, 1934 to Charlie and Alice McMahan in the small community of Chicolete in DeWitt County.

For those of you reading this that never had the fortune of meeting this wonderful man, we will try to sum up a man who lived his life to the fullest in these few small paragraphs.

A lifelong resident of Cuero, Bobby spent his life serving others. He began by serving his country in the U.S. army during the Korean Conflict. He then served the residents of Dewitt County as Sheriff for 16 years, thus making him the longest serving Sheriff in the history of DeWitt County.

Brad Haun

Brad Thomas Haun, 50, of Meyersville passed away Sunday, July 31, 2016. He was born June 5, 1966 in Cuero to Clifford and Bette Jo Haun. Brad was self employed and was a member of the Meyersville Volunteer Fire Department and St. John’s Lutheran Church.

He is survived by parents Clifford and Bettie Jo Haun of Meyersville; daughters, Christine Denise Haun and Lauren Elizabeth Haun of Cuero; sister, Lesley Bruns (David) of Goliad; brother Clay Haun (Michelle) of Meyersville; and nieces.

He is preceded in death by sister, Julie Helen Arndt; and nephew Quinton Wade Haun.

Visitation and services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 4 at noon at Freund Funeral Home with services to begin at 1 p.m., with Pastor John Boor officiating. Burial will be held at a later date.

Pallbearers will be Elwood Rangnow, Scott Pokluda, Kyle Rohan, Kenny Ray Tamm, Kevin Fagg, Vance Egg, Jason “Hubby” Wendel, Finley Blackwell, Jennings Steen and David Bruns.
