Ken Towery

Roland Kenneth Towery (Ken) was born on Jan. 25, 1923 in Monroe County, Mississippi. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family in Austin on May 4, 2016, the anniversary of 69 years with his wife, Louise. He was 93 years old.

After his family moved to Texas in 1924, he grew up on a farm in South Texas. Entering the US Army on his 18th birthday, Ken served during World War II in defense of the Philippines where he was captured at the fall of Corregidor and interned as a prisoner of war in China for three and one-half years. Among other decorations, he holds the Purple Heart and Presidential Unit Citation with two Oak Leaf Clusters.


Edmond Allen Cessac

Edmond Allen Cessac passed away April 27, 2016. He was 69 years old. He was born June 19, 1946 in Abbeville, Louisiana to Edmond and Gladys Cessac.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jimmy Cessac.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sammye Sue Cessac of Rockport; son, Jeremy Andrew Cessac (Erin) of Rockport; grandchildren, Logan Drew Cessac, Brock Shepherd Cessac, and Colt Hudson Cessac.

The family had a memorial service at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 1 at the Portland Church of Christ.

Marcie Brown

Marcie Dawn (Dameron) Brown, 43 years old, passed from this life to be with God on Sunday, May 1, 2016 after a short battle with cancer. Born in Wheat Ridge Colorado to Don and Mary Lynn Dameron on Aug. 17, 1972, she moved with her family to Round Rock when she was nine years old. 


Lu Webb

Lu Webb went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, April  23, 2016. Lu was born Aug. 7, 1927, to Lewis and Blanche Vowell in Colorado City, Texas.

Lu was no stranger to lean times growing up during the Great Depression. She knew the value of hard work and did her fair share growing up on a working cotton farm, also raising dairy cows and chickens. She continued to manage affairs for Vowell Farms up until her death.

Lu graduated from Colorado High School in 1943. She was a real life “Rosie the Riveter” during World War II.  In a time when many women did not travel far from home, she blazed a path across the country and entered the workforce. Fibbing about her age, she went to work before her eighteenth birthday, for Boeing in Reton, Washington. There Lu attached the 1st and 4th motor covers for B-29 bombers. She was so proud of her country and the part she played in the war effort. 


Sherra Nelson

Sherra Louise (Peebles) Nelson, 61, of Cuero passed away Friday, April 15, 2016. She was born Oct. 9, 1954 in Cuero to Donald and Agnes Peebles. Sherra was very active and loved being outdoors sailing and horseback riding. She was a beloved daughter, sister and mother. She will remain in our hearts forever.

 She is survived by daughter, Kimberly Transue of Austin and brother, Frank Peebles of Victoria.

 She is preceded in death by her parents and brother William “Bill” Peebles.

 Graveside services will be held Tuesday, May 3 at Hillside Cemetery with Pastor Terry Brown officiating.

Shirley Schorre

Shirley Ann (Stevens) Schorre, 81, a life-long resident of Cuero, died peacefully in Austin on March 21, 2016, surrounded by family, a few days after suffering a massive stroke. Wife of the late Elwyn F. Schorre, Shirley Ann is survived by daughters Jan (Allan) Reagan of Leander, Pam (Terry) Haun of Meyersville, Valerie (Clay) Whites of Ingleside on the Bay, son Mike (Mary Ann) Stubbs of Cuero and stepsons Rex and Jeff Schorre (Karen), both of Cuero. Shirley Ann’s granddaughters are Mindy Davis, Nikki Nagel, Kelsie Murray, Brooke Luchak, Megan Whites, and Ashley Stubbs. Her grandsons are Clint Hahn, Vance, Kyle and Cody Stubbs, James Watson, and Clay Whites II. Shirley Ann has 12 great-grandchildren, and many step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.


William Paul “Bill” Stepanski

Bill Stepanski, 64 year old Woodward, Okla. resident, passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2016 in Woodward. A Rosary and Prayer Vigil and visitation will be held Monday, April 18 in St. Peter Catholic Church. The Rosary will be prayed at 5:30 pm; Prayer Liturgy will begin at 6:00 p.m., followed by visitation. A Rosary and visitation will also be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20 at Massey Funeral Home in Yorktown.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, April 21 at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church with interment to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Yorktown. Local arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home and Massey Funeral Home directing the services in Yorktown.


Ernest E. Sertuche

Ernest E. Sertuche was born in Cuero on Aug. 1, 1957 to the late Erasmo Rivera and Amelia Sertuche. God called him home on Friday, April 15, 2016. He married Nelda Gutierrez, the love of his life, April 10, 1976. God blessed them with 40 years of marriage and two daughters, Sara of San Antonio and Kristy of Yorktown.

His family was the love of his life. He treated his family like royalty and loved to spoil them. He also devoted 19 years of his life to the Little League association as president and coached numerous teams. Many of his players still call him “Coach.”

He graduated from the University of Houston, Victoria with a Bachelor of Science Degree and worked for the DeWitt County Juvenile Probation Department for 15 years and the last 10 years as chief. Ernest was instrumental in working with many families. He was an advocate for “his kids” and was passionate about helping them.


Henry Frank Henkes III

Henry Frank Henkes  III, 31, left this world on April 15, 2016. He was born in Cuero to  Beatrice and Henry Henkes, Jr. on August 15, 1984.   Henry lived his entire life in Cuero and was a graduate of Cuero High school in 2002. He has spent the last 9 years working as a gas compressor mechanic for CDM Resource Management.

Henry is survived by his loving wife Nichole and his two precious sons, Grayson (5) and Brantley (18 months) as well as his parents. He also leaves his sister Sabrina (Adonis) Gray, brother Randolph (Ashley) Henkes, grandfather, Franklin Schmidt, grandmother, Samantha Krause and numerous nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends.


Debra Sue Kubala

Debra Sue Kubala, 53, of Nordheim passed away Sunday April 10, 2016. She was born July 21, 1962 in Yorktown  to Doris Buehring and the late William Caruthers.

She is survived by her husband Johnnie Kubala of Nordheim, daughter April Kubala of Yorktown, son Johnnie Kubala Jr. of Runge. She is also survived by her sister Sandra Meadows, grandchildren Matthew Kubala, Dylan Alvarez and Kayla Alvarez.
She is preceded in death by her father, grandson Richard Alvarez Jr.

Visitation was from  5-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 13 at Massey Funeral Home. Funeral Service was at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 14 at Massey Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Runge Cemetery.
