Gloria Franklin

Gloria Mae Holmes Franklin, 71, passed into eternal rest March 23, 2016. She was born to the late Willie Holmes Sr. and the late Lucille Houston in Ganado Aug. 22, 1944.

She is survived by her children Carlton (Chairita) Franklin Sr. and Carolyn Barnett. 

She is also survived by her siblings: Glenn Holmes, Willie Leslie Holmes Jr. and Audrey Taylor; as well as seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her son, Mark Franklin.

Jerry Comstock

Jerry M. Comstock, 83, passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2016. He was born March 12, 1933 in Tonkawa, Oklahoma to Miles and Virginia Comstock. Jerry married the love of his life, Brenda Morehouse, on Jan. 18, 1982 in Huntington, West Virginia. He was a pipeliner with local Union #798.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda; daughters, Janet Comstock Simoneau of New Braunfels and Angie Morehouse Coste of La Vernia; sons, Jerry Martin Comstock, Jr. of Manhatten Beach, California, James Melton Comstock of Victoria, Jeffrey Clint Comstock of Port Aransas; sister, Virginia Lee Mokry of Austin; 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Joshua Eugene Comstock and brother Miles Monte Comstock, Jr.

Visitation will be Saturday, March 26 at 1 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home. Services will follow at 2 p.m. with Pastor George Yarborough officiating.


Vivian Thomas

Vivian Thomas (Gardner), 76, of Cuero, passed away Friday, March 18, 2016. She was born on March 2, 1940 to the late Ira Sr. and Leola Gardner of Cuero. Vivian accepted and professed her love of Jesus Christ at an early age and united with Brothers Chapel United Methodist Church and later with the First United Methodist Church in Cuero.

Vivian attended Daule High School and later went on to Victoria College and earned her CNA and Medication certification. She was employed by Cuero Community Hospital and then went on to work for Mrs. J. Carter Thomas as a caregiver and Margaret (Missy) Thomas for many years until her health declined. Vivian married the love of her life, Tommy Thomas, on Dec. 24, 1964. She was a wonderful wife and mother of nine children, five daughters, four sons and the proud grandmother of 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.


Brandon Hull

Brandon Keith Hull, 30, of Cuero and La Porte passed away Thursday, March 17, 2016. He was born June 12, 1985 in Houston to Jeanette Jardina and the late Brian Keith Hull.  Brandon worked with computer software and enjoyed playing computer games.

Brandon is survived by his mother, Jeanette Jardina of La Porte; grandparents, JC and Mary Ann Hull of Cuero; and brother, Christopher Keith Hull.

He is preceded in death by his father, Brian Keith Hull.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Kenneth Cooper

Heaven gained an angel when, on March 17, 2016, Kenneth W. Cooper passed from this life to live with our Lord at the age of 75. He was born on May 27, 1940 to the late Riley G. and Norma Lee Cooper in Pleasanton, Texas. He lived there until he began working for DuPont as an operator and then mechanic, moving his family to Meyersville. He worked for DuPont for 28 ½ years before being medically retired in 1996.

He was an avid hunter, fisherman, mechanic, and gardener. Devoted to his wife and girls, he spent countless hours of time with helping on 4-H animals and projects, and he took great pride and happiness in all his grandchildren. Those that knew him readily saw his integrity, honesty, work ethic and willingness to help others.


“Sunny” Manuel Perez Jr.

“Sunny” Manuel Perez Jr. 50, of Yorktown, died Sunday March 6, 2016. He was born March 10, 1965 in Nixon to Rosa Gonzales and the late Manuel Perez Sr.

He is survived by his mother Rosa Gonzales of Yorktown, sons Manuel Perez III, Adrian Perez, Jose Perez, daughters Monica Perez, Rosie Perez, Elizabeth Perez, 21 grandchildren and sisters Norma Perez Herrera and Lorain Gonzales.

He is preceded in death by father Manuel A. Perez.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 11 at Massey Funeral Home with a rosary starting at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 12 at San Luis Catholic Church. Interment will follow at San Luis Catholic Cemetery.

Belen Pena

Belen Salazar Pena entered into rest on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at the age of 76.

She was born on March 13, 1939 in Hallettsville to the late Pedro and Inez Aguilar Salazar. 

She is survived by her children Pedro (Janie) Hernandez of Cuero; Pascual (Elvira) Hernandez and David Salazar, both of Brownfield; Santiago (Juana) Pena, Jr. of Lubbock; Estella Esquivel, Irene Flores, and  Guillerma Hernandez, and Angelica (Gelasio Jr.) Garcia, all of Cuero; Rosana (Reynolfo) Gonzales of Runge; and Maria Luisa Perez of Cuero. She is also survived by her sisters Dominga (Uvence L. Jr.) Davila of Victoria; Susie (Faustino) Alvarez of Victoria; and Teresa (Jose) Estrada of Saginaw, Michigan. In addition, she is survived by her 26 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.


Alexander Lopez

Alexander (Alex) Lopez, 80, of Cuero passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2016. He was born June 3, 1935 in Concrete to the late Louis Lopez and Librada DeHoyos Lopez. He married the love of his life, Dora Saenz, Oct. 17, 1959 in Belton.

He is survived by his wife, Dora; daughters Mary Linda Arguellez (Mario), JoAnn Renteria (Michael) and Yolanda Barron (Nabor), all of Cuero; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; brothers, Joe Lopez (Dorothy) of Yoakum and Johnny Trevino (Theresa) of Cuero.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers David Lopez, Martin Lopez, Leroy Lopez, Louis Lopez, Jr., Augustine Lopez, Jesse Lopez, Sr.,  and infant Pedro Lopez; sisters, infant Marie Louisa Lopez, Frances Gutierrez, Elvira Vera and Narcissa Alaniz.


Bernice Henze

Bernice Henze, 97, of Yorktown, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Thursday March 3, 2016. She was born Feb. 4, 1919 in Cuero to the late W.P. and Edna Voelkel Schulz. She was baptized into the faith August 10, 1919 and confirmed April 10, 1938 under the guidance of Rev. Schaws at Nordheim Lutheran Church. She enjoyed going to dances with her friends and it was at one of these dances she met her future husband Norris. On Dec. 20, 1938 she and Norris married and she left the amenities in Nordheim and traded them for life in the country. Bernice always said she didn’t know how to boil water when she first married, but you would have never guessed as she was an excellent cook.  She loved to read and play Skip-Bo.  After her Lord and Savior, her family was most important to her and she loved having everyone come to visit on Saturday nights. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Miriam Circle.


John Bade

Rev. John Randolph Bade, pastor, author, poet, and friend to all, passed away March 2, 2016.

He is survived by his wife Rev. Robin McCullough-Bade, son Michael Bade and his fiancé Alisha Rosa. John fought the good fight against Parkinson’s Disease for over 26 years and provided hope to those who daily face adversity. His gentle strength and beautiful smile brought the best out of those he met. He helped create Movers and Shakers, a local Parkinson’s support group. He embodied his mantra “Peace, Courage, and Strength!” John was born in Cuero, DeWitt County, Texas on Dec.3, 1957, the sixth child of Heinie and Frieda Bade. He was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Arneckeville and confirmed at St. Mark Lutheran Church, Cuer.
