Auditions for Gaslight summer play

The 2024 summer production at the Gaslight Theatre in Shiner will be directed by Cuero City Councilman Bill Matthys. The play is “In Praise of Miss Brown” by Pat Cook, a heartwarming comedy about a high school teacher, Constance Brown, and her students in a small town in the early 1960s.

Yorktown Culinary Arts students receive certification

During this final semester of the 2023-24 school year, 100% of Yorktown Secondary Culinary Arts Teacher, Mrs. Catherine Ramos’, Advanced Culinary Arts students successfully attained their Food Protection Manager certification, passing a very difficult test and making a commendable achievement in their culinary education. Students who received their Food Manager Certification are: Kasey Gonzalez, Destany Guerrero, Audrena Hernandez, Tommy Perez, Paul Rodriguez, Ruby Rodriguez, Perla Rosales, Camerin Sanmiguel, Braiden Silgero and Gabriella Smith. Following this accomplishment, students were honored with a luncheon at Fogo de Chão on the Riverwalk in San Antonio, Texas, where they had the privilege of engaging with the restaurant manager, Damian Gelacio, who shared insights into his profession, the comprehensive on-thejob training provided by the company, and his experience in the vibrant culinary scene of New York City. The students also toured the Alamo and the Menger Hotel. Ramos said, “I am so proud of my students for working hard these last three years in Culinary Arts! Being able to eat with them at Fogo de Chao was an honor and I will always cherish the memory.”

Council to study streets, outdated ordinances

A committee to inspect Yorktown’s streets and rank them for repair formed at the Yorktown City Council regular meeting on April 29. Council members Connie Hall and Joe Dickie Rodriguez, along with at least one city staff member, will divide a town map into quadrants and create a system of inspection.

New Westhoff Cemetery chapel dedicated

The Westhoff Cemetery Association held their annual Cemetery Decoration Day on April 28, in keeping with their tradition of placing new flowers on loved ones' graves to honor their memory. This year, in addition to the usual grave decoration activity, the Association also held a Blessing for their recently completed Westhoff Cemetery Chapel.

Rockin' K Boutique Opens

The Yorktown Chamber of Commerce celebrated the grand opening of new business owners Emily Jennings and Chance Kaiser on May 1. The Rockin’ K Boutique on Main Street features women’s and children’s clothes that are “girly with a hint of western.” In addition to the shopping experience, the boutique offers spray tans, lashes, teeth whitening & hair extension installs.
