In February 17’s emotion- filled season opener, the Cuero Gobbler baseball team hosted Dickie Goebel Night, a special event designed to honor the unforgettable legacy of Dickie Goebel, the loved 'voice of the Gobbler Baseball team.' Legendary for his commentary and deep love for the game, Goebel's contributions to Cuero baseball will never be forgotten.
With Mr. Goebel’s family on hand, Rhonda, Dickie’s wife, took to the mound to throw the ceremonial first pitch, drawing a standing ovation from the crowd. Dickie Goebel exemplified the heart that makes Gobbler baseball so beloved in the community.
In true rivalry tradition the Gobbler vs. Yoakum Bulldog game did not disappoint. The Cuero Gobblers, however, took care of business in their home opener as they edged the Yoakum Bulldogs in eight innings for a final score of 2-1.
The Bulldogs took the lead in the top of the second on a passed ball, but Gobbler Junior Aiden Strecker took advantage of the same error to tie it up in the bottom of the fourth. Both teams battled it out with Cuero’s pitchers recording 15 strike outs throughout the tight contest. The duel on the mound kept fans on the edge of their seats, anticipating each pitch and hoping for that game-changing play.
As the game progressed, it became clear that both teams would havetoputupagoodfight to score runs. Both Cuero and Yoakum's defenses remained steadfast, making it a showcase of strategy. After a seven inning back and forth battle, the game moved into extra innings. The decisive moment came from yet another passed ball, allowing the Gobblers to score the winning run. The stadium erupted in cheers as Cuero fans celebrated the 2-1 victory. Senior Caleb Nagel stood out for Cuero, going 1-3 at the plate, contributing a single, scoring a run, and a stolen base. His efforts, along with Senior Colton Strelczyk, who also went 1-3, played a crucial role in the win.
As the baseball dust settled and the crowd began to make their way out of the stadium, the true significance of Dickie Goebel Night resonated with fans. It wasn’t just about the game; it was a tribute to a man whose voice will forever echo through the hearts of Cuero baseball fans. With the win, Cuero begins their season under Head Coach Karl Saenz, at 1-0. Next up for the Gobblers will be Industrial on Feb. 24, and the Yoakum Tournament Feb. 27-March 1.
