Freshman Jaide Jones finished off her Freshman year in style by earning a bronze medal at the state powerlifting meet, at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, on March 13, 2025. Jones set a personal record for total weight at 670 lbs. Her results at the meet were Squat 275 lbs, Bench 135 lbs, and Deadlift 260 lbs. Jones described her experience, “The THSWPA state meet was exhilarating, and I cannot wait to do it again! My goal at this meet was at least 4th place, and I crushed it!”
Softball district opener The Lady Gobblers took on the San Antonio Memorial Minutemen in their opening district game on Friday, March 14. With hopes high and spirits even higher, the Lady Gobblers wasted no time in establishing their presence, launching into an explosive offensive performance from the beginning, ending with a 21-0 victory.
Right from the first inning, the Lady Gobblers showcased their batting prowess. They came out swinging and quickly racked up an impressive 18 runs, setting the tone for a commanding victory. The early onslaught was a strong statement from the Lady Gobblers, who were eager to start their district season with a win.
Leading the charge was Junior Julianna Cox, who had an outstanding performance at the plate. Cox went 3-for-3, showcasing her power-hitting abilities with a home run and 6 RBI’s. Her ability to connect with the ball consistently throughout the game set the tone for the offense. Cox wasn’t the only player making waves at the plate. Freshman Natalie Taylor, Senior Audrey Kremling, Sophomore Laela Mendiola, and fellow Freshman Reagan Reitz all matched her hitting feat, finishing 3-for-3 as well. This wide array of talent demonstrated the depth within the Lady Gobblers' roster, highlighting a promising season for the team.
While the offense was on fire, the Lady Gobblers' defense was equally solid. Pitcher Taylor took the mound with great poise and confidence, delivering a strong performance over three innings. Her ability to keep the San Antonio Memorial Minutemen off balance was key to maintaining the Lady Gobblers' lead. Taylor struck out six batters and limited the Minutemen to just 13 at-bats.
“I thought our team came out and played well,” Coach Cody Miller said. “Wewonineveryaspectof the game and that’s what you want to see at this point in the season. A constant theme we continue to discuss is how important momentum is, and it was great to use that momentum last night in our first district game.”
Golf gold
Golf has long been a sport celebrated for its blend of precision and strategy, and the recent Edna Cowgirl Invitational showcased just that, particularly for the Lady Gobblers. The Varsity squad secured an outstanding first-place finish, with Catherine Chilek leading the charge.
Chilek’s impressive score of 89 earning her a gold medal. Contributing significantly to the team’s success, Brynlee Whitley and Lennie DeMarce both cameinwithanequallyimpressive score of 99, tying for third place. Mackenzie MoncriefandSarahRodriguez added their scores to the team total, and Jewelee Arriaga finished 8th overall individual.
“Everyround,theyshow growth in skill and confidence,” Coach Marky Kate Goebel said. “It shows with many personal bests at the Edna tournament. I’m excited to see how they continue to develop and compete throughout the rest of the season.”
Additionally, the JV team exhibited remarkable performances of their own, also finishing in first place. Leah Hernandez emerged as the standout golfer, clinching the top spot with a score of 100. Supporting Hernandez’s efforts, Julia Aleman finished in a commendable second place, followed by Lilah Hardy in third and MaKayla Cardenas in fourth. With such a solid placement across the board, the JV squad illustrated the bright future of the Lady Gobblers golf program. “I’m incredibly proud of the Lady Gobblers and the strides they’ve made on the course this season. Their dedication, focus, and commitment to improving their game have been inspiring,” Goebel stated.
With a total team score of 325, the CHS Gobbler CueroGreenTeamdemonstrated teamwork and determination, finishing in first place. Leading the charge was SeanDylan Salazar who completed the course with a score of 78. His outstanding performance earned him the individual gold medal. Hot on Salazar's heels was Waylon Dietze, who finished third overall with a score of 80. Slipping into fourth place was Weston Strelczyk, who finished just one stroke behind Dietze with an 81. Completing the top five for the Cuero Green team were Tyler Grogan and Jacob Keller, with scores of 86 and 91, respectively.
But it wasn’t just the Green team that shone on this fantastic day for Cuero golf.TheCueroWhiteteam also demonstrated their skillsonthecourse.Landon Crain was the standout golfer for the White team, posting an 89. While the team didn’t claim any top positions in the individual leaderboard, their effort was one to be noted by others. Members of the White team included Stran Gaitan, Noah Weghorst, and Ethan Garrett, who finished with scores of 101, 104, and 113, respectively.
Not to be overlooked, the Cuero Gobbler JV team also left their mark at the Edna Cowboy Invitational. With a strong showing led by Cannon Wilson, who finished with an impressive score of 81, the team ended their day with a gold medal. Following him was Weston Pizalate, who brought in a score of 97, earning second place for the JV team. The competition for third was fierce, as Ace Arroyo and Connor Whitley both tied with scores of 98.
“The guys played really well and are continuing to improve towards district,” Coach John Marek stated. “We shot our 2nd lowest round of the season as a team. We’ve got two weeks to get ready for some tough district competition at Colony Creek.”
