Monday, March 10 the Yorktown baseball team played against the Refugio Bobcats on their home field. The Wildcats fell short in their first district game, 11-1 after five innings.
The Wildcats put the ball into play, but weren’t able to conjure up offensive momentum and left batters stranded on base. An offensive highlight came when the Wildcats were down 0-4 in the third inning and Brayden Knostman stepped into the batter's box. He created a brief rally for Yorktown as they scored their first and only run of the night. To start the bottom of the third, the Wildcats were back at the top of their batting order. Lead off batter Matthew Olguin got a full count and put the ball into play before grounding out. Colton Rogers got on base by an error when a pop up was dropped by the opposing third baseman. Gunner Mungia hit a deep ball to center field but unfortunately Rogers was called out running to third. Randen Zuniga hit a single to center, moving Mungia to third base. Knostman stepped into the batter’s box with two teammates on base and two outs already recorded. Mungia scored when Knostman put the ball into play. Aaron Guzman was thrown out at first to conclude the inning, 4-1.
The Wildcats trailed by two runs after the first inning however they showed promise and defensive fortitude by holding the Bobcats scoreless in the second. Another defensive highlight came in the top of the third when the Wildcats turned a double play. Their first batter had a single to center field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. The second batter hit the ball back to pitcher, Zuniga who threw him out at first. The first baseman, Mungia threw the runner out at third, recording the double play. It was during the fifth that the Bobcats were able to capitalize on errors, extend their lead, and conclude the game.
