Yorktown family tragically loses home in fire

Multiple agencies responded to the fire in Yorktown on March 24. County residents are reminded that a Burn Ban has been issued.. Unfortunately, the home was a total loss, but no injuries were reported. Once the fire reached the attic, it was difficult to control. (Photo by Ele Chew)

A tragic fire broke out at 834 Metting School Rd. in Yorktown on March 24, resulting in the complete loss of the home. Manpower was limited, despite the response from multiple agencies. The Yorktown Volunteer Fire Department (VFD), Nordheim Fire Department (FD), Cuero FD, Cuero VFD, and Westhoff FD all contributed to the efforts, along with the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office. Crews from Commissioners Ryan Varela’s Precinct 1 and James Kaiser’s Precinct 3, along with Yorktown and Cuero EMS, were also on site.

The initial call was received at 2:30 p.m., and numerous truckloads of water were transported to the scene. After the fire was contained, firefighters departed around 9:30 p.m.

“The fire started in the garage area, but the cause is still unknown. Neighbors were the ones to call it in. We received excellent support from various entities,” Emergency Management Coordinator (EMC) Billy Jordan stated.

“Once the fire reaches the attic in older homes, it becomes difficult to control,” explained Yorktown Fire Chief Christopher Ochoa.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Most fire departments in DeWitt County are composed of volunteers and FDs are currently seeking new individuals to step up and serve.

“We're struggling to maintain personnel during the day and even in the evening. You know, it’s hard work. It’s after hours. It’s long hours. You’re gonna lose sleep. You’re gonna miss meals. You’re gonna do all that kind of stuff. The commitment and dedication required to maintain our volunteer status mean a lot to us. However, we are facing significant challenges,” FC Ochoa said.
