Mayor recounts March events, suggestions from youngsters

Hello All, Next month will make one year since I was sworn in as Mayor of Cuero. What a year it’s been! I look forward to my second full year in the service of our beautiful community and the citizens of Cuero.

Hello All, Next month will make one year since I was sworn in as Mayor of Cuero. What a year it’s been! I look forward to my second full year in the service of our beautiful community and the citizens of Cuero.

The beginning of March was a sad time for me as the community was allowed to go by the Standard Printing building and sort through and take anything left from its closing. What an icon business. Dewitt Poth and Sons will be replacing the business at a different location downtown. I wish Gerard Gonzales and his family best wishes on his retirement.

Mar 7th, saw the Council touring the Texas Disposal Systems plant in Creedmore, Texas. Very impressive in their recycling efforts: five recycling areas from paper to cans to plastics to wood, not much is wasted.

The Chamber of Commerce Awards banquet was held on Mar 13th, highlight for Council was the award of the Larry Carter Award presented to Councilman Bill Matthys, very well deserved.

Friday Mar 14th was an exhausting day for the Mayor. I participated in Hunt Elementary Career Day, spoke to 9 different classes. The day started at 8:30 and ended at 2:30, mentally drained, but I picked up great ideas from the students on how to make Cuero better for its youth. Responses included an amusement park, laser tag, skating rink. Most agreed Cuero needs a theater, as do I. I told them we will try.

Mar 22nd the Downtown Market Days was held at the library pavilion. So good to see the event growing from year to year, and shout out to Sandra Osman, Main Street Director, for spearheading the event.

Welcome to the city’s new Associate Municipal Court Judge Nora Martinez, who will replace Associate Judge Hallie Hall, who resigned. Welcome to Judge Martinez. April will be a busy month and is designated as Child Abuse Awareness month. Please visit the city’s many websites for upcoming events!! More to Follow
