Cuero softball had a strong start in district play with a March 18 win over John F. Kennedy High School, 18-1, but LaVernia posed a challenge on March 21, falling just short 6-7. However, they bounced back with a victory over Gonzales, 6-3, posting a March district record of 3-1.

In the Kennedy game, Regan Reitz led the charge with a solid performance, going 2 for 3 with 3 RBI. Laela Mendiola added to the win going 3-4 with 2 RBI, but the standout performance came from Julianna Cox, who went 2-4 with a home run and 5 RBI. With contributions from the entire team, Cuero’s offense was relentless.

On the mound, Natalie Taylor continued her strong season with a stellar pitching performance. Completing 4 innings, she allowed just 1 earned run, striking out 7 batters and proving her capability as a dominant force in the circle.

The momentum however, took a hit during their next game against LaVernia. Despite a valiant effort, the Lady Gobblers fell just short with a final score of 6-7.

Bailey Morrow emerged as a key player in this matchup, going 3 for 4 at the plate. Additionally, Kendal Broll recorded her first RBI of the season, contributing to the team’s efforts to stay competitive. Taylor once again took the mound, pitching 6 innings and facing 32 batters, but unfortunately, the team could not pull through in an always competitive district matchup. The loss moved Cuero to 12-5-1 on the season and 2-1 in district.

Following the tough defeat at LaVernia, the Lady Gobblers displayed impressive resilience. They bounced back with a strong 6-3 victory over Gonzales.

Caroline Kubesch shone brightly in this matchup, going 2 for 3 with 2 RBI. The game started off setting the tone for the Lady Gobblers, scoring 1 run in the bottom of the first inning. The Lady Apaches tied the game in the fourth, but Cuero responded emphatically, scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the fifth to seal the deal. Taylor showcased her endurance and skill, completing a full 7 innings on the mound while maintaining her precision with minimal walks.

Now with a district record of 3-1 and a season record of 13-5-1, the Lady Gobblers look poised to make a significant impact as the season progresses. Their next matchup is highly anticipated, and fans are eager to see if Cuero can continue their strong performance and maintain momentum in the district race.

Tuesday, April 1, the Lady Gobblers will head to San Antonio Memorial to start the second round in district play, and Friday, April 4, they will move over to the John F Kennedy Rockets field. The team will return home on April 8, for an intense rematch with LaVernia. JV plays at 5 and Varsity at 7:00 for all games
