March 26 was a day to remember for the Cuero golf teams as they showcased their talent at the District 28-4A Golf Tournament held at The Club at Colony Creek. The competition was fierce, but the Cuero boys and girls teams rose to the occasion as they secured spots to advancing them to Regionals.
The boys team finished in an impressive second place finish overall, with a team score of 365, narrowly trailing first-place LaVernia, which posted a score of 348.
The Cuero roster was led by an amazing performance from Waylon Dietze, who not only contributed immensely to the team score but also earned the title of District Champion, clinching victory with an impressive individual score of 78. His competitiveness and skill on the greens were pivotal in the team's success.
“I was very pleased with my performance overall. While there were some shots that could have been better, everything worked out in the end,” Dietze said. “I am grateful to have teammates who helped our entire team reach the regional tournament. I hope we can continue to succeed at that level and continue on to the state competition.”
The boys team consisted of Dietze, SeanDylan Salazar (88), Tyler Grogan (97), Caleb Keller (102), and Weston Strelczyk (104).
Joining the team at regionals in the individual medalist division, will be freshman Ethan Garrett, who delivered a remarkable performance by finishing 3rd overall with a score of 87. With the top two individuals that were not part of the team score heading to regionals, Garrett is definitely one to keep an eye on.
Other impressive talent in the individual top 10 were Salazar, Landon Crain (96), and Grogan, finishing 4th, 9th, and 10th respectively. Congratulations to Stan Gaitan (99) and Noah Weghorst (102) for contributing to the great golf season as well.
Girl’s Golf
The girls team matched the boys in both performance and spirit, also finishing in 2nd place overall with a combined score of 423, to first place LaVernia at 367.
Brynlee Whitley emerged as a standout golfer for the girls, earning a 5th-place finish overall, with her score of 103. Alongside Whitley were teammates Jewelee Arriaga and Catherine Chilek, who placed individually 6th and 7th, respectively. Adding to the teams second place finish were Lennie DeMarce, 9th overall, and Mackenzie Moncrief.
Coach Mary Kate Goebel noted “I’m very proud of the girls for battling it out on a tougher course and pushing through some injuries. I’m excited for what’s in store for us at regionals.”
Both teams are gearing up for the Regional Championships, set to take place at Colony Creek Golf Course in Victoria. The girls will tee off on April 1415, while the boys will follow shortly after on April 16-17. As they prepare for the challenge ahead, the players are filled with a competitive spirit to continue their journey in the postseason and are hopeful for what lies ahead in their journey for a shot at the state title.
