A tragic fire broke out at 834 Metting School Rd. in Yorktown on March 24, resulting in the complete loss of the home. Manpower was limited, despite the response from multiple agencies. The Yorktown Volunteer Fire Department (VFD), Nordheim Fire Department (FD), Cuero FD, Cuero VFD, and Westhoff FD all contributed to the ef- forts, along with the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office. Crews from Commissioners Ryan Varela’s Precinct 1 and James Kaiser’s Precinct 3, along with Yorktown and Cuero EMS, were also on site.
The initial call was received at 2:30 p.m., and numerous truckloads of water were transported to the scene. After the fire was contained, firefighters departed around 9:30 p.m.
“The fire started in the garage area, but the cause is still unknown. Neighbors were the ones to call it in. We received excellent support from various entities,” Emergency Management Coordinator (EMC) Billy Jordan stated.
