On Tuesday, April 1 the Wildcat and Kitty Kat golf teams played the first half of their district golf tournament at Pamilla Beach Golf Club in Port Aransas. Other teams in the district include Woodsboro, Skidmore-Tynan, Three Rivers, Pettus, and Port Aransas.
After the first round of play, the Wildcats tied with the Port Aransas Marlins. The Kitty Kats, in second place, trailed Port Aransas by 33 strokes and defeated Kenedy by 23.
The Wildcat team shot a combined 31 strokes over par. The team consists of Cameron Willis, Kolton Eckhardt, Connor Saunders, Brody Metting, and Colton Rogers. Willis led Yorktown, shooting five over par.
Sydnie Krueger, Ashlie Gaida, Lila Buch, Evelyn Merks, Braleigh Dodds, and McKinley Rogers represented the Kitty Kats. Buch and Krueger guided their team, both shooting 94.
In UIL golf, each district qualifies the first and second-place teams and the first and second-place individuals to the regional tournament. Both the Kitty Kats and Wildcats were standing in a great position to advance and were looking to clench a spot the next week when they finished district play.
The second round was played on Monday, April 7 at Gabe Lozano Golf Course in Corpus Christi. Willis once again captained the Wildcat team and had a second place overall individual finish. The team concluded district as silver medalists succumbing to Port Aransas by four strokes. Day two results included: Willis (77), Eckhardt (90), Saunders (86), Metting (88), and Rogers (94). “This group of boys are very talented golfers, and they each have a chance to continue past the regional tournament. I know they will be ready, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Yorktown team near the top of the leaderboard,” stated Coach Leason.
The Kitty Kats also advanced as district runner-up. Buch and Krueger tied for third place individuals with a player from Port Aransas. After the playoff Krueger was named fourth and Buch fifth. Day two standings for the Kitty Kat team include Buch 113, Krueger (113), Dodds (116), Gaida (116), Rogers (118) and Merks (116). “These ladies have done a terrific job this year, and have achieved their goals, so far. They have a chance to advance further this week and will do their best, as they have always done. Regardless, they will have fun and enjoy the journey,” stated Coach Leason.
Both teams should have an advantage going into the regional tournament, as it will be played on the same course as the district tournament, Gabe Lozano Golf Course. The two-day tournament will be April 14-15 for the boys and April 16-17 for the girls.
