Dr. Cynthia E. Orozco of Cuero was recently elected to the board of the Alliance for Texas History. The Alliance was founded in 2024 to foster a comprehensive understanding of the rich and diverse history of Texas. The Alliance sponsors an annual conference, maintains a website with recent news about Texas history, and will soon publish its first journal, the Journal of Texas History. Its second conference is slated for May 15-17 in San Marcos.
Orozco is a graduate of Cuero High, president of the Cuero High Student Council, and received her BA from the University of Texas in Austin and PhD from UCLA. She has served on the board of the Organization of American Historians, the largest professional historians’ society for US historians. She is also a Fellow of the Texas State Historical Association and currently serves as a member of the DeWitt County Historical Commission. She is the thirteenth Mexican American woman in the United States with a PhD in US History.
Orozco is the author of No Mexicans, Women or Dogs Allowed: The Rise of the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement; Agent of Change: Adela Sloss-Vento, Mexican American Civil Rights Activist and Texas Feminist; Pioneer of Mexican American Civil Rights: Alonso S. Perales; co-editor of Mexican Americans in Texas History; over eighty articles for the Handbook of Texas; and opinion-editorials for newspapers in Texas, New Mexico, and California.
