Baseball fans were treated to an exhilarating two-game matchup between the Cuero Gobblers and the Floresville Tigers on May 1 and May 3. These games were filled with heart-pounding moments, showcasing the drive of both teams.
In the first game, held on May 1 at Coastal Bend College, the Gobblers came out swinging. Eli Garrett launched a double early in the game that set the tone, while Caleb Nagel followed up with a solid hit that scored the first run. Kyle Bias then added to the excitement by bringing home Nagel, establishing a promising 2-0 lead for the Gobblers as the Tigers stepped to the plate.
However, the Floresville Tigers wasted no time in responding. A strong double to right field allowed them to score, reducing the deficit to 2-1 by the end of the first inning. The game shifted dramatically in the third inning when the Tigers tied the score with a well-placed triple between center and right field. They didn't stop there, hitting a two-run homer that pushed the score to 4-2 in favor of Floresville. Despite their efforts, the Gobblers struggled at the plate, unable to overcome the Tigers' four-run lead. The game concluded with the Gobblers losing 2-6, leaving the team to regroup ahead of the second game. The second match, originally scheduled for May 2, was postponed to May 3 due to thunderstorms, but it delivered the intensity needed to keep fans on the edge of their seats. The Tigers set the tone again, starting strong with Jaden Moreno's double that scored the first run, giving them a 1-0 lead right away. The Gobblers, however, responded with a strong defense, highlighted by stellar pitching from Eli Garrett, who was determined to keep the Tigers at bay.
The atmosphere was electric in the fourth inning when Jossiah Taylor hit a single to third base, loading the bases and putting pressure on the Tigers’ defense. Aiden Strecker followed up with ahardhittosecondbaseon a fielders’ choice allowing Bias to cross home plate, tying the game at 1-1.
As both teams battled fiercely, the game went back and forth, with the Gobblers accumulating six hits compared to the Tigers' three by the end of the fifth inning. Eli Garrett stayed on the mound for Cuero, pitching for seven and one-third innings. His impressive performance included allowing only three hits while striking out seven and walking just one batter.
As regulation play came to a close, the score remained tied at 1-1, leading to extra innings. However, in the top of the eighth inning, the Tigers capitalized on unfortunate walks pulling ahead with two more runs. With the pressure mounting and time running out, the Gobblers couldn’t find their rhythm at the plate and ultimately fell short with a final score of 1-3.
