This is one of the first questions the staff at Pet Adoptions of Cuero asks potential adopters. The size of the dog has to fit the needs, living conditions and overall physical ability of the new pet parents. At the shelter there will always be a variety of 'sizes/types' of canines to choose from and here's the categories to think about before em'barking' on pet ownership.
Small breeds are most often favored by seniors or singles living in an apartment or cottage type home. These adopters are looking for a pet that will be a companion, a lap-sitter, can do its business outside or inside on a paper piddle pad. Small dogs do require some physical activity but a toy on the floor or a small chewy treat will keep them happy and occupied. They won't be expecting you to run around the block with them every morning or night. Chihuahuas, yorkies or shitzu's, Pomeranians, Jack Russell's or weiner dogs all fall in this category.
Medium size breeds are more active and love families with children to play fetch with, to take to the dog park or wrestle over chew toys with. They need to be walked and exercised every day. If they are young dogs in the 20 to 35 pound size they will need lots of interaction with humans, they want to learn commands and dog manners and can be an inside or in and outside dog. If adopted as a pup it is so rewarding for the pet owner and the dog to benefit from training. The time spent bonding with your canine while seeing the success of followed commands is so rewarding. This category has the most variety of breeds from heelers, some retrievers, and the shelter's favorite breed - Heinz 57!
Large size breeds - there are so many in this part of Texas. But it takes a special pet parent to provide the needed accommodations for these BIG pets. Most large dogs will need plenty of room to run and roam, a secure area they come to know as 'home' (fenced) and also they too need 'human' contact daily. They can be impressive guard dogs, they can be lazy porch sleepers or they may even want and hope to be your lap puppy - regardless of the size. They are Huskys, German shepherds, boxers, hound dogs, full retrievers, black mouth currs plus lots of Heinz 57's in this category too.
Inviting everyone to visit the Pet Adoptions of Cuero shelter and the Cuero City Animal Shelter - come meet some wonderful vetted pets in all SIZES. After all - a House is not a Home without a Dog!
