City Council heard from local groups about their 2025 applications for Hotel Occupancy Tax funds at the June 9 regular meeting and approved a resolution for a $4.2 million sidewalk project.
Mayor Pro Tem Mitch Adams led the council meeting in the absence of Mayor Emil Garza.
In the public comments, John Littlefield of Southwest Engineers introduced the firm and expressed interest in future city infrastructure projects.
Also, resident Pat Tre- vino asked Council to consider investigating a recent encounter she and her family had with the Police Department. She expressed general concerns about the offi cers’ conduct and referenced a more detailed account shared publicly.
In other matters, council approved two resolutions, one in support of a Texas Department of Transportation proposal to improve sidewalks along Main Street, Fain McDougal Drive, and extending to Park Heights and Second Street. They also approved the interlocal agreement with Cuero ISD for two School Resources Officers to be assigned to secondary campuses during the 2025-26 school year.
In preparation for their budget workshop, council heard from Finance Director Connie Hawes about the process of allocating HOT funds. Five of the seven groups who applied for funds, shared updates on their 2025 plans and requests: Cuero Heritage Museum, Cuero Turkeyfest, DeWitt County Historical Museum, Tri City Empowerment Council, and Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum. The Cuero Chamber of Commerce and Cuero Main Street will address council at a later date.
Council also approved road and golf course closures for Cuero ISD’s Cross Country Invitational on Aug. 30 and the Championship meet on Oct. 4. The closures will support event safety and allow space for runners and spectators.
Sha'non Henson and Mitch Adams were approved as delegates to the Golden Crescent Regional Planning Commission General Assembly. Charles Tounley was appointed to the Regional Environmental Resources Advisory Committee.
In the Reports section, Finance Director Connie Hawes presented the FY 2024–2025 Second Quarter Financial Report. She noted that overall financial performance is in line with expectations, with a few variances due to approved expenditures from fund balance and the timing of grant proceeds. Council was advised that additional details are available upon request.
City Manager Wayne Berger announced the following Items of Public Interest: City offices will be closed on June 19, 2025, in observance of Juneteenth. Offices will reopen June 20, at 7:30 a.m.
Commercial and residential trash services will run as scheduled.
The Citizens Collection and Recycling Center will also be closed on June 19 and reopen at 8:00 a.m. on June 20.
