County Judge Daryl Fowler and County Treasurer Desi Poth-Garibay joined more than 200 other county officials from across Texas at the 2025 Conference of the County Investment Academy, held June 16-18 in Corpus Christi.
Hosted by the Texas Association of Counties (TAC), the annual conference brought together county treasurers, auditors, judges, commissioners, and finance professionals to strengthen financial leadership and enhance investment strategies for county governments. Discussion topics included current economic trends, best practices in public fund investing and strategies for leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance county management.
“This conference is a great chance to learn what’s new and what’s working when it comes to managing county finances,” Poth-Garibay said. “It helps ensure we manage taxpayer dollars wisely and keep our county financially secure.”
The county treasurer, auditor, and county judge compose the investment committee for De Witt County. The portfolio of financial assets set aside for future road improvements and infrastructure needs in the county typically ranges between 50 and 80 million dollars. According to Judge Fowler “we are intent on meeting our current financial needs for public safety and general welfare, as well as preparing for a soft landing when the Eagle Ford Shale Play is depleted.”
The County Investment Academy is co-sponsored by the Southwest Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University’s Cox School of Business and reflects a statewide commitment to ongoing education and sound financial stewardship in county government.
