The first of many truckloads of donations headed to the Hill Country Thursday morning with an escort by the Cuero Fire Departments and Cuero Regional Hospital ambulance.
Two truckloads of diapers, formula, canned goods, water and everything else essential were gathered by Jeni Garrett with Parkway Church assisted also by Lifeway Church.
See the Guest Column by Jeni Garrett about the experiences of the convoy, page 7.
Before leaving from the CRH parking lot, hospital employees and Cuero residents signed messages to flood victims on three banners. Garrett's mother-inlaw, Sharold Garret, prayed with the group for the protection and healing of those recovering from the disaster as well as those helping in the recovery.
Jeni Garrett said $50,000 worth of supplies had been collected and $10,000 in gift cards.
The distribution of relief supplies will be coordinated by their escort, the Cuero Fire Department, along the route with the convoy running sirens in locations where they will stop. Sharold Garrett said the intention is to take the supplies to the communities that need them rather than a central drop off in Kerrville.
The group will also be guided by a non-profit in Marble Falls called The Arc, which will share information on which communities are most in need.
Other supplies are being gathered in Cuero by Rendezvous and the Cuero Chamber of Commerce for delivery before and after the weekend.
In Yorktown, Hilltop Services, Crown Hospice, Sassy Winks and Mojo Mulching are gathering relief supplies.
