Focusing as usual on student outcomes in their July meeting, the Yorktown ISD School Board heard reports from elementary and secondary administrators about the latest test results and plans for the coming school year.
Elementary Principal Stephanie Zigmond reviewed recent testing data for each grade’s English and math. Though all grades showed growth, 2nd grade averages fell short of the goals in both subjects.
To respond to the deficits for that class as incoming 3rd graders, YES will offer extra support for the teachers with improved Really Great Reading (RGR) and Amplify programs.
Zigmond said that the large incoming 5th grade class will benefit from four home groups instead of three and intentional grouping with all students.
Secondary Principal Michael Hannum has resigned to take a job at a school in Ezzell, so Laura Patek is guiding junior and senior high. Her main job title, however, is Chief Academic Officer.
Patek said she surveyed students and got feedback that morale was low and they didn’t enjoy coming to school. To help with morale, students will be recognized daily with photos and videos of them playing on hall monitors.
After reviewing the latest strengths and weaknesses in test results, she said of special concern was low math scores in 7th grade. She outlined a plan to close the gap with incoming 8th graders by special tutoring, a study skills class, guidance help with life skills and leaning into the new STEM lab lessons.
She also announced that honors classes will start rolling out this year.
ITEMS APPROVED In action items, the board approved a purchase of a new walk-in freezer and cooler for the cafeteria, using the National Breakfast and Lunch Program Fund Balance. Superintendent Gerald Nixon described the many repairs and remedies tried over the past to keep the units running. However, temperature fluctuations, especially in the freezer, made the replacements necessary.
The board also approved moving forward with bids for a new roof for the Culinary Arts building.
