Kaffee Klatch remembers night watchmen, clapper

GOD first...Heavenly Father, we thank You for the many blessings, known and unknown. As You guide us with Your Almighty Spirit, give us strength and courage to help others whose spirits' are weak and failing. Give our hearts, with open desire, to find a way to help them in their needs as we pray in the name of our dear Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Pray for those who are ill, suffering, or are in harm's way.

Two red necks were looking through a Sears Roobuck catalogue and admiring the beautiful models. Earl said to Bubba, 'Have you seen all the beautiful girls in this catalogue?' Bubba says, 'Yep. And they sure are beautiful and look at the price.'

Earl says with wide eyes, 'Wow. They aren't very expensive and at this price I'm buying one.'

Bubba smiles and pats him on the shoulder, 'Good idea. Order one and if she is as beautiful as she is in this catalogue, I'll get one too.'

Three weeks later, Bubba asked his friend, Earl, 'Did ya ever receive the girl you ordered?'

Earl says, 'No. but it shouldn't be long now. I got her clothes yesterday!'

I don't know how April 11 was in my article last week. This is the original one I had on my flash tab and I didn't follow the lady that looked up the correct date for last week's article. She had the flu so I couldn't follow her to her computer. Heard in Kaffee Klatch this morning.....If you are working like a mule, be careful..You might have to distinguish who your parents are: Which one is the mare and which is the jackass?

Seventy years ago seems like a long time to anyone younger than 30 years old. But to us older ones, we recall so many things while growing up in Nordheim that mostly will not be believed in this day and time. Up until 1960, Nordheim City still had night watchmen who would go after 10 o'clock and check all the doors of all the businesses as well as the back doors but mainly watched in case of fires or breakins. My father-in-law also carried a small pistol, a leather 'clapper,' and a flashlight, and stayed until some of the merchants arrived in the morning. When it got cold, he would stay in the building that is now the Nordheim Rec. building where he could watch all of Broadway Street until early mornings after midnight. After one or two o'clock, it was mostly quiet. In fact, he often saw a coyote walk right through town on Broadway. In the morning,he would walk home, milk his cow, feed his chickens, eat breakfast and then go to bed and sleep until noon.

Of course there were many others that had that job as relief was needed sometimes. But they all carried that 'clapper' which was a leather sheath that had lead inside. It would put the lights out of anyone that received a tap on their skull. The town marshal and County deputy also carried one when things got out of hand. While it was known that most men who drank beer were always happy, it turned bad while some of these would drink whiskey and think they were 10 feet tall. A good whop on the head settled things and the victim was carried home that resulted in a big knot on their head. It usually corrected their attitude after that. A lawyer never got involved because in those days it was settled by the Justice of the Peace. Nordheim had a jail behind where Nitro's building is now and wasn't used any more. A lot of interesting stories of those times have been lost through time of way back when but came up during Kaffee Klaatch many times in some of the memories of us old codgers.

Most of us old codgers still remember the Mexican Dance Floor on Tenth st. and Cabeza that was surrounded with booths of tamales, raspa, and various items. Tamales were 10 cents a dozen and a raspa was a nickel each. I would go there when they had dances and enjoy the Saturday Night Dance music and get my fill of things to eat for less than a quarter. Always felt safe there too as I could talk Spanish and understood it too.

I have been so blessed with having a memory of so many things. The people who have crossed my paths throughout life, the experiences I've had, the joy of friendships, it all is endless as each day seems more important than the last. But I still can't remember what I did yesterday most of the time but can remember the boys, girls, teachers, and the things we did in high school. So do a lot of us old codgers remember stories we have that get beyond interesting. See you next week.
