Road work and back to school

GOD first...Heavenly Father, some of us awake each morning with aches and pains or worries of the day to come. We even forget to thank You for a new day. Lord, help us to be eager, wide awake, and prepared with a new attitude, all the while knowing You will provide us with blessings and Your Amazing Grace, no matter what we encounter throughout the day. As we give thanks for the start of a new day, help us to remind ourselves, we are not alone, as we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.Pray for those who are ill, suffering, grieving, or are in harms way.

**A red neck husband who has 6 children, begins to call his wife “Mother of 6” rather than her first name. The wife at first is amused and chuckles. A few years down the road, the wife has grown tired of this “Mother of 6”, the red neck says, “What’s for dinner tonight? Get me a beer.” She gets very frustrated. Finally, while attending a party with her husband, he jokingly yells out, “Mother of 6.” I think it’s time to go home.” The wife immediately shouts back, “I’ll be right with you, father of four!”

Some people have been wondering what the men working on Hwy 72 are doing now. They have shaped the ditches and dirt work next to the highway and are getting ready to seed the areas with grass seed to try to hold the dirt in place before the big rains come. That has usually been the custom in previous years. Instead of waiting for rain, they will water it too so roots can establish and hold the top soil in place. Looks great so far.

Saw some wild turkey hens along Cabeza Creek the other day that are starting to bunch up. Didn’t see any toms with beards so they are still in hiding. Usually see them in the early morning or late in the evening. It’s a beautiful site to behold.

Most schools have started and in Nordheim, they began on the 20th of this month. My great granddaughter, Olivia, is starting 2nd grade and her mother will be teaching her in that class. We will see how that works out. In relation to that, some of the students are being home schooled, so I understand. I’m just glad that we didn’t have it when I went to school. We didn’t get to lay around, like some are reported doing, We’d be still picking cotton or pulling ear corn and maybe hauling hay. Mama’s education was really good but she carried a nice peach switch to enforce her rules. Times sure are changing. The kids are telling the parents what to do. Can’t really grasp or understand the failure of our educations system. Us old people don’t know nutten!

The coffee was hot and the conversations were at the point where everyone of us 9 people could understand what was being said. Even Myrtle was able to join in and have her say. I was reminded about dances at the Nordheim Shooting Club Dances way back when. You have to be 85 + to remember, when single men who came to dance, stood in the center of the dance floor, they couldn’t wear hats or caps. If a boy wanted to dance with a certain girl, he had to cut in by taping the boy on the shoulder that was dancing with her. Most of the men were gentlemen and the girls were ladies. But the main ingredient of keeping things respectful, there was a section we called the “hen section,” where mamas and aunts would pay a dime to listen to the music and keep an eye on their precious daughters, nieces, neighbors, and who the girls were dancing with. Young girls wore skirts and dancing shoes and when intermission came, especially during summer time, they would go outside where it was cooler. This is when the hen section would carefully watch through the window to make sure a girl wouldn’t slip out to a car with a boy and play kissy-kissy. Nice girls didn’t do that. There are a few people who can remember this and right now, they are smiling or laughing. Younger boys and girls had their own small dance floor next to the main one where cousins, brothers, and sisters would be learning how to dance. The Hall didn’t have tables around the dance floor like they to now. Older couples and parents danced cheek to cheek (some didn’t) but they were all there to have fun and dance. To the left of the bandstand, there was a room with a small light, where babies and small children would be put to sleep on blankets when it came bed time so their parents could dance and check on them. The music, the orchestra played, wasn’t loud and it lulled them to la la land until it was time to go home. Although the men and women worked hard all week long, when it came dance time, the music lifted their spirits and dancing was the order for the evening. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. See you next week.
