The Lady Gobblers faced a challenging week in their volleyball campaign, suffering tough losses against both La Grange and Goliad. These matches unfolded from Sept. 16 to 19, and while the results were disappointing, a renewed focus on their strengths might be just what they need to turn the tide moving into district play.
On Sept. 16, the Lady Gobblers took on the La Grange Lady Leopards. The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, as the team battled hard despite the final scores reflecting a tough outcome at 18-25, 7-25, and 25-27. Standout performances came from Jessa Cox, who racked up 10 kills. Setter Stella Maldonado showcased her versatility during the match, not only contributing 12 assists but also demonstrating her serving skills by securing two aces. Defensively, Maldonado, and Caroline Kubesch led the charge with 6 digs as well as Cox with 7.
The Lady Gobblers faced an even steeper challenge on Sept. 19 against the state-ranked Goliad. Fans were hoping for a comeback, but the Lady Gobblers struggled to find their rhythm, leading to another tough match with scores of 11-25, 1825, and 13-25. Jessa Cox continued to be a force for the team, leading with 8 kills, while Ashlyn Gamez and Taylor Gayle each contributed 5 kills. Once again, Maldonado was a key player, collecting 9 assists and 9 digs, highlighting her essential role in both offensive setups and defensive plays. Kubesch also held her own in the backcourt with 7 digs, contributing to the overall team effort.
Additionally, Lady Gobbler performances came from the serve line, where Cox, Maldonado, and Makenzi Rath combined for a total of 7 aces (3 for Cox and 2 for Rath & Maldonado), showcasing their ability to put pressure on their opponents. “Our kids have been working extremely hard, and we’re seeing steady improvement each week. We’ve played a tough preseason schedule to prepare us for district, and we’re excited to get started this Tuesday in San Antonio against San Antonio Kennedy,” Coach Leah Flores.
The recent losses have brought the Lady Gobblers’ season record to 16-17 as they prepare to enter district play. On Sept. 23, they are set to face off against the John F. Kennedy Lady Rockets in San Antonio, who currently sit at a close 14-14 in their season.
