On Friday night, Sept. 19, the Cuero Gobblers took to the field at Buccaneer Stadium to face off against Corpus Christi Miller in what turned out to be a game that showcased the defense.
With unwavering energy and determination, the Gobblers overpowered the Buccaneers with a commanding 56-19 win.
The Cuero Gobblers wasted no time, scoring on just the third play of the game. Running back Camelo Perez swept to the left, going untouched, for a 57-yard touchdown run, igniting excitement among the Gobbler fans. The momentum continued as quarterback Jaxxon Marie executed a short pass to Walker Dietze from the 3-yard line, pushing the Gobblers ahead 14-0 with 7:47 still left in the first quarter.
Defensively, Cuero was just as impressive. Jossiah Taylor led the charge with a crucial fumble recovery, halting any hope the Buccaneers had of turning the tide. Minutes later, after a sack stifled the Buccaneers’ attempts to gain momentum, Marie found Walker Dietze for a 21yard pass, extending the lead to 21-0 in the first.
The Gobblers displayed their offensive versatility by efficiently switching plays and responding to the Buccaneers’ efforts. Scoring on another pass to Dietze with just 2:15 remaining in the first quarter, the Gobblers were up 28-0.
As the second quarter ensued, the Buccaneers attempted to rally with a series of promising plays. However, the Gobblers’ defense maintained their intensity, tallying another sack on quarterback Freshman David James for a loss of four yards. Corpus Christi managed to march down the field and found themselves at the 5-yard line. Nonetheless, disaster struck when a quarterback keeper resulted in a fumble. Perez seized the moment, scooping up the loose ball and sprinting 97 yards for a defensive touchdown. “I knew they were fast, so I just had to keep running no matter what,” Perez said. The Gobblers’ relentless energy kept the momentum firmly in their grasp, with a lead of 35-0.
Although the Buccaneers eventually found the endzone with a 12yard touchdown pass, making the score 35-7 with 5:28 left in the second quarter, the Gobblers weren’t about to let up. Their confidence seemed unshakeable as they entered halftime with a sturdy lead.
The second half mirrored the Gobblers’ dominant first half, with the team scoring an additional 21 points. They executed a flawless 10--yard touchdown pass to D’Zayvin Bonner, followed by a 25-yard run from Perez. As if that wasn’t enough, Luke Ruiz had an interception and Taylor added a defensive touchdown with an interception, sealing the Buccaneers’ fate.
With standout performances from players like Perez, who racked up 114 yards on only 6 carries, and Jordan Jones, who contributed 86 yards on 10 carries, the Gobblers demonstrated both their offensive skills, and defensive strength. Dietze and Bonner were reliable targets, with Dietze racking up 64 yards on 7 receptions and Bonner 62 yards on 5 receptions, making the final score 56-19.
Following suit for the Varsity Gobblers, the JV and Freshman teams took care of business against Miller as well, on Thursday, September 18, at Gobbler Stadium. The JV Gobblers are sitting at 4-0 with a commanding win 40-12. The Freshman are also sitting at 4-0 with a 44-0 win over the Buccaneers. The Gobbler teams will take on Belton this week, with the JV and Freshman heading to Tiger Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 25, and Varsity hosting the Tigers at Gobbler Stadium on Friday, September 26 for the Homecoming game.
