Pet Adoptions of Cuero and shelters all over are overwhelmed with kittens from last season.
Yet daily calls and visits are coming into the PAOC office with offers to “donate” more kittens to the shelter. Sadly, there is no room at the shelter inn.
PAOC recommends anyone who comes upon a new litter of kittens to please not move them. The mama cat will come back to feed them or move them on her own to a safe spot. If possible, create a small enclosed area where the kittens will be safe from predators, weather or busy foot or car traffic.
New born kittens can be bottle fed or syringe fed but it is a very intensive time consuming process. PAOC will be glad to offer advice and instructions but unfortunately they do not have the staff to provide round the clock attention to newborns while currently caring for 30 cats and 30 dogs already in the shelter inventory.
However, once the kittens are eating on their own it is possible some shelters may have room and be able to take them. Hopes are that more people will step up and help with the adoption process by socializing the newborns and vetting the kittens. Most importantly, spaying the mama cat as soon as possible once her kittens are weaned.
The public can help out immediately by visiting their local shelter and adopting a vetted cat orkitten.Witheverykitten adopted out, it means one or two more can be taken into the empty cage space.
