The Cuero 7th Grade Gobblers powered past Seadrift, securing a 23-8 victory behind a strong defensiveshowingandkey offensive plays on Monday evening, Sept. 22.
Cuero struck early when quarterback Carson Costello handed off to No. 10 for the first touchdown of the game. Seadrift blocked the extra- point attempt, but their opening possession ended in disaster as a high snap rolled out of the end zone for a safety.
On the Gobblers’ next series, the offense marched downfield, capped by a 12-yard strike from No. 30 for a touchdown. No. 27 nailed the extra point, giving Cuero a 15-0 lead with 2:56 left in the first quarter.
The second quarter proved to be a defensive battle. The Gobblers’ defense, led by Johnson, Alvarez, Hopkins, and Fairchild, held Seadrift scoreless, forcing turnovers on downs and pushing the Pirates back with sacks and tackles for loss.
At halftime, the Gobblers maintained their 15-0 advantage.Cuero extended its lead in the fourth quarter. Hopkins broke loose for a 14-yard run, setting up a quarterback keeper for 32 yards. Moments later, Hopkins powered in for a 7-yard touchdown. No. 30 added the twopoint conversion to make it 23-0 with 1:37 remaining.
Seadrift managed to avoid the shutout, finding the end zone in the closing seconds and tacking on a two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 23-8. But it was too little, too late, as the Gobblers closed out the win.
With the victory, the 7th Grade Gobblers showcased a balanced attack and relentless defense, setting the tone for the season ahead.
