Volleyball district play is in full swing, and the excitement surrounding the Lady Gobblers has reached a season high in the community.
The Lady Gobblers kicked off their district play with a powerhouse performance, securing back-to-back wins against San Antonio Kennedy and Gonzales. With fans cheering them on, the Lady Gobblers have set a promising tone for the rest of district play.
In their opening match against San Antonio Kennedy, the Lady Gobblers showcased their skill and teamwork, dominating the court with scores of 25-16, 2518, and 25-14. The standout players of the match were Ashlyn Gamez and Caroline Kubesch, both racking up an impressive 9 kills each. Their combined offensive strategy was crucial in keeping the Kennedy defense on their toes, which ultimately contributed to the Lady Gobblers’ resounding victory.
The game was not just about scoring; it highlighted the Lady Gobblers’ defensive prowess as well. Kubesch displayed her all-around skills by leading the team with 13 digs, showcasing her ability to read the game and respond to attacks from the opposing team. Meanwhile, Stella Maldonado was instrumental in orchestrating the team’s offense, notching up 15 assists. Her hands-on playmaking was further complemented by her strong serving, as she contributed four aces to the team’s tally, giving the Lady Gobblers critical points that helped them maintain momentum throughout the set.
Their next challenge against Gonzales proved to be equally thrilling. The match went to a nail-biting five sets, concluding with a score of 32 in favor of the Lady Gobblers. After a rocky start that saw them drop the first set 25-27, the team quickly rebounded with a dominant performance in the second set, winning 25-9. Gonzales fought back, clinching the third set 25-23 before the Lady Gobblers displayed their resilience and determination in the fourth set, taking it 25-23. The decisive fifth set was a truly exciting one, as the Lady Gobblers surged to a 15-6 victory, sealing the series and sending a strong message to their competitors.
With these two key victories under their belt, the Lady Gobblers are ready to continue their winning streak as they face San Antonio Memorial on Tuesday, September 30. This match is crucial as it presents another opportunity for the team to potentially enhance their standings in the district. Just a few days later, they will return home to face LaVernia on Friday, October 3, a matchup that promises to be intense given the historical rivalry between the two schools.
