Lady Gobblers volleyball mixed results this week

The Cuero Lady Gobblers hadaweekofupsand downs in their volleyball district matches, managing a win against the San Antonio Memorial Minutemen andunfortunately falling short against the La Vernia Bears.

As the season progresses, the Gobblers are striving to build momentum and improve their performance heading into the second round of district play.

On Tuesday, the Gobblers faced the San Antonio Memorial Minutemen, eager to capitalize on their prior success against them. The match turned out to be an exciting contest, with Cuero ultimately securing a 3-1 victory. The first set showcased Cuero’s skill and teamwork, as they dominated the Minutemen with a score of 25-13. However, San Antonio Memorial pushed back in the second set, narrowly taking it 21-25. The competition heightened in the third set, which became a nail-biter; Cuero managed to clinch the set 2725, demonstrating a fierce determination among the players. They finished strong in the fourth set, winning 25-16.

Star players Bailey Staten and Jessa Cox led the charge for the Lady Gobblers. Staten achieved a new careerhigh with two assists and contributed ten digs, while Cox excelled with an impressive 14 kills, ten digs, and five aces. This duo’s performance was crucial in securing the win and validating Cuero’s strong showing on the court. Adding to the domination, was Caroline Kubesch with 12 kills and T Gayle with 13. On defense, Stella Maldonado and Kubesch led the team with 13 digs each, and Jessa Cox finished the night with 10. With this victory, Cuero improved their overall record to 19-17, while San Antonio Memorial faced their third consecutive loss, dropping to 11-16.

Unfortunately, the Lady Gobblers’ winning streak was halted on Friday when they faced off against the La Vernia Bears. Cuero struggled to find their rhythm in this matchup, resulting in a straight-set loss (625, 16-25, 18-25.) While they exhibited improvement by increasing their point total in each set, the Bears proved to be a formidable opponent. This defeat marked Cuero’s first loss in the district, bringing their district record to 3-1 and their overall record to 19-18.

Coach Leah Flores noted, “We played a scrappy Memorial team Tuesday which challenged us to 4 sets. It gave us an opportunity to have a good night with stats. The win Tuesday put us coming into our Friday match against La Vernia both tied for first. The Lady Bears came out on fire with a fast first set win. We collected ourselves and improved over set two and three. We hope to improve in the second round of district and have all players healthy. Tuesdays match against Navarro at home will be a tiebreaker for who will finish the first round of district in second place behind La Vernia. “

Looking ahead, the Lady Gobblers are set to challenge their rivals, the Navarro Panthers, on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. in a heated district match up.
