A fire destroyed a family home in the 900 block of Cheapside Road in Cuero Thursday, Sept. 25, in the afternoon.
Black smoke was visible from the Cuero Fire Department when firefighters responded to an emergency call about 1:30 p.m., according to the fire incident report. A second emergency caller noted the one-story wooden structure was engulfed in flames.
Firefighters from the Yorktown Volunteer Fire Department joined in to help Cuero firefighters, along with assistance from the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office, Cureo Police Department, DeWitt County Office of Emergency Management, Cuero Fire, Cureo Volunteer Fire Department, City of Cureo Electric, DeWitt County Precinct 1, Cureo Regional Hospital EMS and Texas Division of Emergency Management.
Firefighters fought the blaze from the exterior because the building was determined to be unsafe for entry. The walls of the structure collapsed into rubble with the assistance of firefighters.
No injuries to residents or emergency workers were reported, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The family is being assisted by local churches and other benevolent organizations.
