Yorktown vs. Pettus: District Opener Preview

The Yorktown Wildcats open district play this week after two weeks off, first with a canceled matchup against Bruni which moved to six-man football, followed by a scheduled bye.

The time off should leave Yorktown rested and ready as they face the Pettus Eagles (2-3) in a long-standing rivalry. The Wildcats lead the all-time series 2319-1, including a dominant 63-19 win in their 2024 meeting.

Yorktown will look to use its physicality and size to control the game on the ground. The runheavy offense is led by the backfield duo of Brody Metting and MacKenzie Yanta. Up front, the offensive line, featuring Gunnar Hughes, Manuel Macias, Colton Rogers, Cayden Mika, and Ryan Knostman, will aim to dominate the line of scrimmage and open up lanes for the ground game to thrive.

Pettus enters the matchup with a 2-3 record, showing flashes of competitiveness with a 23-21 win over Center Point and a 42-33 win over Banquete. However, the Eagles have also suffered tough losses, including a 34-0 shutout by Santa Rosa, a 61-8 defeat by Kenedy, and an 18-6 loss to Ben Bolt.

Despite last season’s 1-9 finish, Pettus returns an experienced squad with 10 returning starters on both offense and defense. They’ll look to lean on that experience as district play begins. Key players include running back Jackson Ramirez and quarterback Ramon Reyna III, who the Eagles hope will return from injury to lead the offense.

According to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, Yorktown is projected to finish third in the district, while Pettus is picked fifth. With both teams looking to set the tone early in district play, this matchup could have early postseason implications. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm in Pettus on Oct 10.
