A stellar performance at The Box has earned 2024 Cuero High School graduate Bromli Watson, sophomore setter for the #14 West Texas A&M Lady Buffs, the Lone Star Conference Setter of the Week honor.
Watson delivered 54 assists and one ace in a commanding fourset victory over Midwestern State on Oct. 7, becoming the first Lady Buff since 2019 to notch 50 or more assists in a single match. The match, held on home court in Canyon, marked a milestone in both Watson’s college career and WTAMU volleyball history.
The headline on the university athletics site summed it up best: “Watson Guides the #14 Lady Buffs to a Four-Set Win Over MSU. The six-foot Watson was praised for bringing skill and leadership to the court.
A 2024 graduate of Cuero High School, Watson excelled as a student-athlete under head coaches Leah Flores and Chelsie Lemley. A four-year letterwinner, she earned First Team All-District, First Team All-Area, and Academic All-State honors during her senior year — all while serving as team captain and graduating as a valedictorian. She began her collegiate career at Blinn College in Brenham, Texas, under head coach Terry Gamble, where she recorded 750 as-sists, 132 digs, and 57 blocks in one season. Watson was named a First Team All-Conference selection and helped lead the Buccaneers to a 38-4 record, a Region XIX title, and a trip to the NJCAA National Championships.
In 2025, she followed Coach Gamble to West Texas A&M, where she has already become a central figure for the Lady Buffs. Through the first 16 matches of the 2025 season, Watson has posted impressive stats: 498 assists, 40 kills, 118 digs, 23 blocks. Her ability to control the pace of the game and read the floor makes her one of the most impactful players in the Lone Star Conference, and a major reason why the Lady Buffs are a top 15 team in the AVCA Division II Coaches Poll. While Watson’s performance speaks for itself, it’s her mindset and preparation that set her apart.
“Being named Setter of the Week really boosts my confidence,” Watson said. “It’s something only a few people achieve. I’m grateful.”
Watson attributes much of her success to a strong support system, faith, and a clear mental approach. She also draws strength from her faith in God, which she says helps her stay confident and centered during highpressure moments.
“I rely on shortterm memory during games,” she explained. “You must move forward quickly and trust your teammates. We have great chemistry.”
When she’s not making plays, Watson is focused on her future. A biology major, she plans to become a physician assistant. In her free time, she enjoys reading, studying, and spending time with friends.
Her inspiration for pursuing athletics is her brother, Brady Watson.
“He pushed me to be better,” she shared. “I’ve always looked up to him.”
Watson noted her father tells her daily she is the “coolest person” he knows.
Despite her accolades, Watson is open about the challenges she’s faced — particularly with self-doubt.
“Volleyball has helped me grow in confidence,” she said. “It’s taught me how to stay positive, be optimistic, and believe in myself.”
That positivity shines through in her leadership and in how she prepares games: with focus, solitude, and a good playlist of hype music.
“My biggest strength on the court is attitude,” Watson added. “It’s pretty easy for me to stay positive, and that helps my teammates too.”
As the Lady Buffs continue to push toward a postseason berth, Watson’s leadership at the setter’s position will be key. Whether it’s setting records, setting teammates up for success, or setting an example through her character, Bromli Watson is helping define what it means to be a Lady Buff — on and off the court.
Jami Watson, Bromil’s mother, said years of preparation have gone into her daughter’s success.
“She’s been playing volleyball since first grade and started club ball in 7th grade,” her mother said. “All the hours we have spent driving to club practices and tournaments have been worth it and we’d do it all over again. We are proud of her dedication and passion for the game and especially courage to go off and meet new teammates. Her faith has really grown as well as her mental toughness, and she’s come to realize that wins and stats don’t define her identity. She’s learning to embrace the hard work, and that pressure is a privilege.”
