Greeting my fellow Cueroites: The 53rd Turkeyfest is in the books, Paycheck was victorious this year giving Worthington bragging rights for the next year.
Many new friends and memories were made in a short period of time; the Worthington Minnesota delegation was 45 strong this year. I would like to give another huge shout out to the Turkeyfest Association Board, Edward Oates, the current President and the entire board do an amazing job on putting together a firstclass event. Planning for next year is already underway, thank you sir.
On Oct. 7, the Mayor’s Youth Council participated in the first field trip of the year. Twelve members toured the Cuero waste treatment plant to learn how city infrastructure works. Most folks take utilities for granted. Where does wastewater go when you flush your toilet, wash your clothes, take a shower, wash dishes? The group was shown the wastewater as it came in the plant, went through the cleaning process and discharged clean and clear into Gohlke Creek, which flows to the Guadalupe River. The group was shown the documentation. Job isn’t done until the paperwork is done — pardon the pun — which is paramount in reporting to the Texas Commission on Environmental Services.
The youth council also discussed community events to participate in this fall semester. Christmas Downtown is serving hot chocolate on Dec. 11 at Christmas in the Park, and that was decided upon. Please come out and support the youth council and take a picture with them. They are our future.
On Oct. 8, I attended the Rural America Forum in Gonzales. Many speakers gave ideas and examples of rural communities coming together and improving the economic status in the region, Mayors, City Managers, Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development offices from the surrounding Communities were in attendance. Networking was the order of the day.
Ruby’s Race Day Free Pancake and Breakfast Tacos was a huge success on Saturday morning before the Great Gobbler Gallop and the Turkeyfest parade. This was the second year and over a thousand servings were distributed. This year Devon Energy joined the effort. Volunteers from Studio built by Amherst assisted as well as last year’s group. Sponsor’s included the Chopping Block (Victoria), Brookshire Brothers, HEB, Walmart, Bushes Chicken, Taqueria Jalisco, GVEC, Energy Waste, the cooking team included Councilmen Mitch Adams and Terry Glover, Bryan Haun (Knights of Columbus) and Nickolas Taylor (CCPAA). Thank you gentlemen. Our State Representative A.J. Louderback came by to say hello. Christian Palacious from US Congressman Michael Cloud’s office served drinks to folks.
This week will be another busy week to include introduction to a newly assigned Department of Public Safety Captain over our area and a planned visit from Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz-R later in the week. The Gobblers are 6-1, good luck next week gentlemen. More to follow.
