State fire officials investigate Cuero house fire

The Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a family home in the 200 block of Togo St., Monday night, Oct. 6, according to Cuero fire and police officials.

The single-story, 992-square-foot wood structure was burning heavily when firefighters arrived on the scene about 9:30 p.m., according to the Cuero Fire Department report. Assistance was sought from the Yorktown Volunteer Fire Department to bring the fire under control. There were no injuries to firefighters or to the residents of the house.

Cuero Fire Department Captain Clint Morris asked the Cuero Police Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office to investigate the fire.

Two of the key responsibilities of the State Fire Marshal are to investigate suspected arson and fires that lead to deaths, according to the agency’s website. Most fires are investigated by local officials. The Fire Marshal’s Office is a division of the Texas Department of Insurance.

“The investigation is ongoing at this time, but the cause of the fire has not been determined,” Ellis said.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office was asked to conduct an origin and cause investigation, according to Mistie Hinote, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Insurance. The investigation is open and ongoing, she said.

Ellis said the announcement about the findings of the State Fire Marshal would come from the Cuero Police Department.
