Friday night saw an electrifying match as the Cuero Lady Gobblers faced off against the San Antonio Memorial Minutemen in a second-round district match up. With a final score of 3-1—23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-15— Cuero not only celebrated a much-needed victory but also extended their current winning streak against the Minutemen to eight matches.
The night didn’t start off smoothly for the Lady Gobblers, as they faced an unexpected setback in the first set. Their sluggish start allowed San Antonio Memorial to seize the advantage, winning 25-23 and putting Cuero in a precarious position. However, the Lady Gobblers turned the match around in spectacular fashion. Fueled by a large crowd and a commitment to teamwork, they won the next three sets, ultimately ending Parents Night on a high note.
The leader on the court was Jessa Cox, whose offensive skill was a key factor in Cuero’s turnaround. With a jaw-dropping 26 kills, she effectively put pressure on the Minutemen’s defense, proving why she is considered one of the top area players. Equally impressive was Stella Maldonado, who orchestrated the plays with finesse, dishing out 28 assists throughout the match. Additionally, Caroline Kubesch showcased her service skills by delivering three aces, contributing to the Gobblers’ strong finish.
Earlier in the week, Cuero faced a more formidable test against their rivals, the Gonzales Lady Apaches. Although they didn’t come away with a victory in that encounter—falling 03 with scores of 2325, 24-26, 24-26— the matches were fiercely competitive. Each set was a nailbiter, with the Lady Gobblers pushing Gonzales to the limit, losing by just a few points each time. Cox and Kubesch spearheaded the offense then as well, each contributing 11 kills, while Stella Maldonado provided valuable support with 17 assists. Makenzi Rath added with 3 aces along with Taylor Gayle at 5 kills.
The bounce back against San Antonio Memorial reflects not only Cuero’s skill but also their resilience as a team. After a sting-ing defeat earlier in the week, their attitude in gaining this win is commendable.
As district play comes to a close this week, Cuero is poised and ready to build on this victory as they head into the playoffs. The Lady Gobblers will hit the road to LaVernia on Tuesday, and then head over to Navarrro on Friday, before traveling to Austin for a warm up game.
