The Cuero Gobblers have made headlines this past week, showcasing excitement that defines high school football. Fans flock to high school stadiums, not just for the games, but for the electrifying atmosphere and edge-of-theseat moments that unfolded over a thrilling three-game stretch, highlighted by dramatic comebacks and nail-biting finishes.
Kicking off the excitement in Sinton, on Thursday, October 16, the Freshman Gobblers faced off against the Pirates in a game that would set the tone for the series. Despite trailing by 14 points, the Freshman Gobblers demonstrated resilience, ultimately securing a hard-fought victory with a final score of 22-14. Their comeback helped to maintain their undefeated season.
Following this, the JV Gobblers took to the Pirates for a match up with just as much intensity. In a contest filled with high tension, the Gobblers executed a dramatic finish, scoring in the final 35 seconds to clinch the game 2014. This continued theme of comebacks was keeping fans on the edge of their seats and fueling their excitement for the main event - the Varsity game on Friday.
The marquee matchup featured the Cuero Gobblers against the Sinton Pirates at Gobbler Stadium, a game that turned out to be not just a game but a legendary clash that will be remembered for years. If you left early, you missed a spectacle, as Cuero mounted a comeback from a staggering 20point deficit late in the game. It all began with Jaxon Marie connecting with D’Zayvion Bonner on a 6play drive, giving the Gobblers an early score. The back-andforth nature of the game ensued, with the teams trading touchdowns, culminating in a tied score of 28-28 at halftime.
The second half saw both teams trading blows, with Sinton initially putting themselves back in the lead. The third quarter started off with Sinton’s Mikhya Green taking one in from the 7-yard line to put the Pirates up by 7. The Gobblers responded from the 7 as well, on a run from Marie. With 21 seconds left in the quarter, Sinton’s quarterback Quincy Bess connected with Shawn Hughes for a 36-yard touchdown.
By the start of the fourth quarter, the Pirates had extended their lead to 35-42. With 6:12 left in the game, Green would take the ball 43 yards to score putting the Pirates up by 14. The Pirate defense sacked Marie on the Cuero 28, with Ezekial Rodriguez on the scoop and score, seemingly placing the game out of reach for Cuero at 35-55. The Pirates attempted a fake extra point, which Cuero’s Paydon Flores along with a host of Gobblers stifled.
But the Gobblers weren’t ready to surrender. In not just a show of skill but unwavering belief and 4:50 left on the clock, the Gobblers scored quickly on a pass to Chris Mathis at the back of the end zone, to bring the game to 42-55. Executing a successful onside kick, recovered by Walker Dietze, Cuero took the ball down the field, to score on a 3yard pass to Mathis, to make the score 4955 with 1:37 left in the game.
Angel Hernandez then executed a second successful onside kick-a rarity in football, recovered by Dietze on the 40-yard line. Cuero managed to tie the game at 5555 through a connection from Marie to Bonner once again, culminating in the Gobblers taking a critical moment for Hernandez to kick the extra point, bringing them ahead 56-55.
The Pirates, facing time winding down, were relentless, setting up a final drive with the potential to win the game. With only seconds left, Sinton’s kicker stepped up for a field goal, but the Gobblers’ defense, led by Stran Gaitan, executed a timely block, sealing the Gobblers’ thrilling victory. “I trust my brothers to get the job done. We are a gritty team and we just find a way to win always and that’s special about us. That’s something you won’t find in a lot of teams,” Dietze said after the game.
This week of football not only highlights the spirit of the Cuero Gobblers but also brings their community together in support of the local high school athletes. As fans continue to rally behind their teams, one thing is for sure — the Gobblers are ready to embrace whatever challenges lie ahead as they chase their goals this season. Get ready for more thrilling football to come!
