A 40-foot trailer loaded with 21-bales of hay and being pulled by a truck caught fire near Lockhart Cemetery Road and Hwy 77A Monday, Oct. 13, about 4:15 p.m.
Cuero Fire Department responded to the alarm and discovered the truck and trailer engulfed in flames, along with several grass fires burning around them, according to the fire report. Two additional tankers followed from Cuero.
Heavy smoke billowed from the fire, and DeWitt County Emergency Management and Cuero Police Department responded to assist with traffic control duties. The heavy smoke cause visibility problems for drivers.
Yoakum Fire Department also sent two fire trucks to the scene to help extinguish the fires, and DeWitt County Precinct 2 sent a tanker and a frontend loader.
The truck was disconnected from the trailer, and the hay was moved to a ditch with the front-end loadeer. The hay bales had to be broken apart and spread out in the burned area, where they eventually burned out.
The cause of the fire was not included in the fire report.
