A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR EMIL GARZA

Hello my fellow Cueroites!

This week Oct. 2831, will find me in Fort Worth at the Texas Municipal League conference, accompanied by Wayne Berger-City Manager and ShaNon Henson- Councilman District 1.

The conference provides us an opportunity to see the latest products on the market, get legislative updates and network with other city officials.

The ribbon cutting for the New Stir Soda located across from TDECU was held on Oct. 23, also taking place on the same day at the Friar Ag Center was the DeWitt County Soil and Water Conservation District sponsored Conservation/ Farm/Ag Healthy You day for all 4th graders in De-Witt County.

This year they hosted 300 students and 31 teachers from all the schools in De-Witt County. They have been doing this for almost 10 years now and the goal is to teach all students about conservation of our water and soil, farming activity here in DeWitt County and how it affects our everyday life. They strive to impress upon the kids that milk comes from a cow, as shown by the traveling SW Dairy cow and that eggs come from chickens, courtesy of Tyson Chicken via their favorite grocery store.

The game warden & TPWD Biologist provide information on the wildlife in the area and GVEC demonstrates the power of electricity and the safety necessary around electrical equipment. The County Extension office demonstrates soil erosion prevention and helps inform the students about the healthy food options and how to make good food choices. The TX Farm Bureau Learning Trailer shows the byproducts of beef produced here in the area, as well as crops, such as cotton, produced here in DeWitt County.

They have a quilter who provides the history of quilting, recycling usable fabric into quilts, and the students get to add to the quilt in progress. This year they had a chuckwagon that baked biscuits for the students and talked about cooking on the cattle drives of years gone by.

The Stevenson Unit Community Work Squad is busy assisting city crews assemble the Christmas in the Park for this year, this year promises to be outstanding with new fixtures to be displayed. Opening day for the Community’s opportunity to see the new display’s will be on Monday, Nov. 24, more details to follow. On Saturday, Oct. 25, I visited the Halloween display at 312 Schleicher Street, the Trevino’s have outdone themselves this year, please go by and visit, photos are encouraged. More to follow!
