The Cuero Lady Gobblers are moving on in the playoffs after a dominant three-set sweep over the Devine Arabians Thursday night, Oct.30, at Seguin’s Goldie Gym.
With set scores of 25–23, 25–17, and 25–23, the Lady Gobblers secured the Bi-District Championship and punched their ticket to the Area round.
Sophomore powerhouse Jessa Cox led the charge at the net with an impressive 25 kills, powering Cuero’s offense through intense rallies and key late-set points. Senior Caroline Kubesch added 10 kills and 13 digs, showing her versatility both offensively and defensively.
Setting the stage for success were Freshman Stella Maldonado and Sophomore Rea-gan Reitz, who combined for 34 assists— Maldonado tallying 15 and Reitz 19—to keep the Lady Gobbler attack balanced and unpredictable. Freshman Taylor Gayle contributed 6 kills, giving Cuero consistent scoring options across the front row.
The first and third sets were battles to the final serve, but Cuero’s composure and teamwork proved the difference. From the outset, the matches were filled with intense rallies, showcasing the competitive spirit of both teams. The first set was a nail-biter, with neither team willing to back down. The Lady Gobblers faced a fierce challenge from the Devine squad, who pushed them to the limit. The Lady Gobblers’ defense held firm against Devine’s late pushes, sealing the match with a strong defense from the squad.
The second set did not disappoint either. One of the most exciting moments of the set was when the Lady Gobblers found themselves trailing 2-6, which rattled nerves in the stands. Yet, the phenomenal support from the crowd proved to be a gamechanger. The enthusiastic fans rallied behind their team, creating an electrifying atmosphere that helped the players regain their composure. The Lady Gobblers responded brilliantly and turned the tide, quickly pulling ahead to lead 10-7. They maintained this momentum, battling through tight exchanges that saw them dip back to a precarious 12-13 deficit. Yet, displaying their ability to work together as a team, the Lady Gobblers closed out the set with an impressive 25-17 win, effectively gaining control of the match. “We are peaking at just the right time and all the pieces are coming together,” Coach Leah Flores stated. “We have put a lot of work in daily and the girls have stayed committed to the process. We are finally seeing the fruits of our labor.”
With the win, Cuero advances as Bi-District Champions and will face Canyon Lake in the Area round on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m., once again at Seguin’s Goldie Gym. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the Lady Gobblers as they continue their playoff run.
