Command Chief Master Sergeant (Ret.) Emil Garza

For more than four decades, Emil Garza has dedicated his life to serving others — first through his military and law enforcement careers, and now through public service in his hometown of Cuero.

Garza’s journey began right after high school in 1978, when he enlisted in the United States Air Force at the height of the Cold War. Over the next 32 years, he served both on active duty and in the reserves, ultimately retiring as a Command Chief Master Sergeant — the highest enlisted rank in the Air Force.

During his career, Garza was assigned to the 433rd Airlift Wing out of Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, working in Security Forces. Among his many deployments, one stands out as his “greatest”: his post-9/11 mission to Saudi Arabia during Operation Enduring Freedom, where he supported Operation Noble Eagle and helped enforce the no-fly zone.

Garza’s legacy of service continues through his family. His son, Emil Garza Jr., followed in his father’s footsteps by joining the Air Force and serving in Security Forces as well. From 2012 to 2014, father and son proudly served together — a rare and meaningful experience that Garza describes as one of the highlights of his career.

As his Air Force career progressed, Garza also pursued a parallel path in public safety. While serving in the Air Force Reserve, he spent 25 years with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ), where his leadership skills continued to shine. Starting in gang intelligence, he rose through the ranks to become an Assistant Warden. His expertise and commitment earned him regular trips to the Pentagon for intelligence briefings every six months.

By the end of his military service, Garza was responsible for more than 3,000 Airmen — a testament to his leadership and dedication. When asked why he joined the Air Force, Garza’s answer was simple: “It was my patriotic duty.”

That sense of duty didn’t end with his retirement. Garza’s passion for helping others led him to serve on the Cuero City Council before eventually becoming the Mayor of Cuero, where he continues to focus on improving the community and supporting both the elderly and the youth.

Outside of his professional life, Garza describes himself as a devoted husband to his wife, Velma, of 42 years. Together, they’ve raised three children and enjoy spending time with their six grandchildren, who range in age from six months to 29 years.

In his spare time, Garza enjoys going on cruises and attending concerts with his wife — a well-deserved reward after a lifetime of service.
