The Yorktown Wildcats faced the Falls City Beavers at home on Halloween night. Though the Wildcats fought hard early, the Beavers pulled away in the second half to secure a 49– 22 victory.
Falls City struck first, scoring on their opening drive at 10:15 in the first quarter. Yorktown wasted no time responding as quarterback Brody Metting kept the ball and powered into the end zone. However, the Wildcats failed to convert the extra point, trailing 6–7.
With just 21 seconds remaining in the first quarter, the Beavers’ quarterback charged up the middle to extend the lead to 14–6. Yorktown answered with determination, marching down the field into the red zone, and just when it looked like penalties would be costly, Matthew Olguin snagged the ball out of the air and willed himself into the endzone despite defenders desperately trying to bring him down on the grass turf. After some confusion on the two-point try, officials ruled Metting had crossed the goal line before a fumble, tying the game at 14–14 and shifting momentum toward Yorktown.
Falls City appeared to regain the lead on a 75yard touchdown run, but it was called back for an illegal formation. The Beavers regrouped, connecting on a pass and later scoring on a toss play with 6:53 left in the half to go up 21–14. Both defenses tightened, trading punts before Falls City broke free again with a long touchdown run at 1:35, extending the lead to 28–14 at halftime.
Yorktown opened the second half with possession but was forced to punt. The Beavers capitalized, scoring twice more to make it 42–14 midway through the third quarter. Metting and Brayden Knostman sparked some life back into the Wildcats’ offense, connecting on a touchdown to make it 42–22 followed by a successful two-point conversion.
Falls City would tack on one final score late in the fourth quarter, sealing the 49–22 win.
The Wildcats honored their seniors in their final home game of the season, and they will close out district play next week on the road against Shiner.
