Cuero Gobblers roll past Robstown 41–20

The Cuero Gobblers closed out their 2025 district campaign in style Friday night, overpowering the Robstown Cottonpickers 41–20 at Gobbler Stadium.

With the win, Cuero capped off their regular season on a high note and will now turn their attention to the postseason.

From the opening kickoff, the Gobblers looked sharp and in control. Cuero jumped out to a 14–6 lead after the first quarter and stretched the advantage to 28– 12 by halftime. By the end of the third, the score stood at 41– 20—where it would remain for the rest of the game as Cuero cruised through the fourth quarter.

A big part of the Gobblers’ success came from the duo of quarterback Jayce Guajardo and receiver Walker Dietze. Guajardo delivered a productive performance, throwing 19 of 29 for 159 yards and two touchdowns. Dietze, who finished the night with 48 receiving yards, had 7 receptions, and two touchdowns- one from Guajardo and one from Jaxxon Marie against the Cottonpickers. Guajardo also found D’zayvion Bonner 4 times for 54 yards, and Chris Mathis who had 5 receptions for 33 yards.

The Gobblers’ ground attack was nearly unstoppable, racking up 232 rushing yards as they consistently broke through Robstown’s defensive front. By comparison, the Cottonpickers managed just 95 rushing yards, unable to match Cuero’s physicality in the trenches. Camelo Perez led the Gobblers with 78 yards on 12 carries, followed by Jordan Jones who had 67 yards rushing. Guajardo also showed off his legs, setting a new career-high with 23 rushing yards. “ I felt like we controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Running backs really ran well and took care of the football,” Coach Jerod Fikac noted. “ I am really proud of Jayce for stepping in and leading the offense. He made some really good reads and throws.“ Defensively Stran Gaitan started the game off with an interception on the 45yard line on Robstown’s first offensive attempt. This allowed the Gobblers to quickly make the score 7-0 in the first quarter with Perez sweeping to the left side to score. The Cottonpickers then had to punt after a couple of long runs. Jordan Jones took the ball 44 yards to set up the second score of the quarter. Marie connected on a toss to Dietze to put the Gobblers up 14-0. On the next possession, Robstown’s Quarterback Trevin Crowley connected with Miles Rodriguez on a 29yard pass to pull within 8, after a blocked extra point by Aiden Strecker.

The second quarter brought its first score from the Gobblers by Blayne Zengerle from the 1-yard line, making the score 21-6. Aiden Stafford would get a sack on the 35yard line to push Robstown back to the 29, and then another pushing them back to the 22-yard line forcing a punt. Guajardo connected with Dietze from the 3 to make the score 28-6 in favor of the Gobblers. On the very next play Crowley connected with Rodriguez for a 62yard touchdown reception, bringing the score 28-12 going into halftime.

The Gobblers finally seemed to get some momentum going in the third with two more scores. The first by Jones from the 2 yard line, bringing the score 35-12. The second by Bonner who made an amazing catch between two defenders on a 4th and 9 from 30 yards out. The third quarter ended with a 21-point lead by the Gobblers. Despite the large lead by the Gobblers, Robstown didn’t back down the entire night. Crowley threw for 214 yards and three touchdowns with his favorite target, Rodriguez, hauling in 103 yards and two scores.

“I believe it’s not how you start a season, but how you finish,” said Dietze. “ Of course we had a great regular season, but ow we need to be playing our best football in order to make a long run in the playoffs.” If the Gobblers can maintain the same rhythm and intensity they showed against Robstown, they’ll be a tough team for anyone to stop as the postseason begins. With district play in the books, Cuero now sets its sights on the Bi-District Round of the playoffs, where they’ll host La Feria next Friday, Nov. 14 at 7:00 p.m. at Gobbler Stadium. After the game Fikac stated “I believe it is a team that is hungry to keep playing. They set a goal at the beginning of the year and are ready to go to work to make that goal happen. It is exciting to be playing a home game in our first round playoff game. We hope that we will paint Gobbler Stadium Green and it will be packed with Gobbler Fans.”
