The Cuero Citizen Police Academy’s 16--week education program will start with weekly classes Tuesday, Jan. 20.
Coordinator Joshua Serbin said he is hoping to make the 2026 registration the “big- gest class yet.” Serbin is a senior patrol officer for the Cuero Police Department who manages the program.
The Cuero Citizen Police Academy is a free, educational program that gives community members a closer look at the Cuero Police Department’s day-to-day operations, policies, and challenges. Students will also hear various presentations from other first responders, local mental health professionals, and local prosecutors.
Students will also participate in training to become CPR Certified. Hands on activities will include wearing “Drunk Goggles” provided by TXDOT to simulate intoxication. Students will also have the option of participating in a ride-along with the Cuero Police Department to build understanding and partnerships between law enforcement and the community. This program is not intended to certify participants as police officers but will create well informed citizens.
This program is open to all area citizens. All applicants will undergo a background check, including criminal history, to ensure suitability to participate in the class. If your application is accepted, you will receive an invitation to attend. This program is based on participation, there is no classwork or tests given. To qualify for graduation, you must attend 80% of the classes which means you can’t miss more than three nights.
After graduation, students will have the option to join the Cuero Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association. Graduates will receive a reflective vest that say, “CUERO PUBLIC SAFETY VOLUNTEER.” This organization assists the Cuero Police Department during various events around the city to include 4th of July in the Park, Our First Responders Meet and Greet, Turkeyfest, Christmas Downtown, and traffic control for Christmas in the Park. The Alumni Association is relatively new, but the members work hard to support the Cuero Police Department and give back to the city.
The next class begins Tuesday, January 20, 2026. Classes will be every Tuesday at the Clubhouse in the City Park from 6 to 9 p.m. This is a 16week program. This class will graduate on Tuesday, May 19. The class is divided into multiple groups. The class coordinator supplies the goggle glasses and water, sodas, and coffee. Every week, a different group is asked to bring food to the class for a potluck style meal.
This is a great opportunity to meet other like-minded citizens from our community. If you would like to attend, stop by the Cuero Police Department to pick up an application or scan the QR code below to download an application.
