The Yorktown Wildcats wrapped up their regular season with a 6-3 overall record and a 3-2 district mark, matching last year’s performance. Yorktown fell to the Shiner Comanches 61-12 Friday, Nov. 7.
Shiner came out strong, jumping to a 21point lead with seven minutes remaining in the first quarter. By the end of the period, the Wildcats trailed 33-0. Yorktown found its rhythm in the second quarter, outscoring the Comanches 12-7. Quarterback Brody Metting connected with Matthew Olguin for a touchdown, and junior Brayden Knostman also found the end zone, bringing the halftime score to 40-12.
The undefeated Shiner squad, currently ranked fourth in 2A Division II according to MaxPreps, shut out the Wildcats in the second half. The Comanches added 14 points in the third quarter and another touchdown in the fourth to close the game 61-12.
Yorktown totaled 169 passing yards, their second- highest passing performance of the season, with 17 completions on 34 attempts. Known for their powerful ground attack, averaging 278 rushing yards per game, the Wildcats struggled to find running room against Shiner’s tough defense, managing just 61 yards on 20 attempts.
Head coach Ryan Knostman said the game turned out to be an opportunity to learn how to play better against Shiner next time.
“Shiner is a heck of a football team and when you play someone like that, you have to execute at a high level on both sides of the ball,” Knostman said. “We didn’t do that last night but the silver lining is we really get to see what we need to correct and get better at just in time for the playoffs.”
Yorktown finishes third in District 15-2A Division II, with Shiner taking the top spot, followed by Falls City and Louise in fourth. The Wildcats now turn their focus to the Bi-District round, where they’ll face Agua Dulce.
